1.0 INTRODUCTION
This soil investigation was carried out at the request of the Contractors Messrs., SICIM.
The purpose of this investigation was to explore the subsoil conditions of the proposed route
for the construction of the structures and facilities composing the Pipeline from CPF to
WP#11 within West Qurna (II) Oilfield at Basra Governorate.
Upon the completion of the soil investigation works, general and certain
recommendations regarding the behavior of the soil with respect to the proposed system of
foundations for the facilities and the structures along the Pipelines route, should be furnished.
The field explorations were carried out between 9th & 11th March 2021 and consist of the
following:
• Drilling of Nine (9) boreholes to (7.5 – 8.0) m depth, along the pipeline route from CPF
to WP#11, all from the existing natural ground level, and performing standard
penetration test (SPT).
• The excavation of Five (5) test pits along the pipeline route from CPF to WP#11, at
location identified by the Contractor to depths of (≈ 2.5) m and obtaining large bulk
samples for various tests
• Carrying out Electrical Soil Resistivity Tests along the pipeline route from CPF to
WP#11 using 4-pin Wenner method, at Six (6) spots in two perpendicular directions.
The tests were performed at multiple spaces (1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 10.0) m, following
(ASTM G-57) (shall be performed in near future).
The locations of the Boreholes, Test Pits & Soil Electrical Resistivity Tests were setup on
ground by AETL’s Engineering Staffs following coordination in UTM system provided by
the Contractor.

2.1.1 BORING
The boring equipment used in carrying out the field works was one (1) multi drilling method
rig using continuous flight auger and rotary drilling method.
The depth of boring of (7.5 – 8.0) m were decided by the Contractor’s Consultant to extend
beyond the zone of influence of significant foundation pressure to materials that were
relatively incompressible.
As the type of foundation might be shallow, from Geotechnical point of view the depth of
the borehole extended to the point where the net increase in stress due to the load action of
the structure is
The method of drilling was carried out following the standards of the American Society for
Testing and Materials (ASTM D1452-09 & D5783-12).
2.1.2 Sampling
• Disturbed Samples
The samples that were secured by the Standard Split Spoon Sampler were also used as
disturbed samples. All disturbed samples were sent to the Laboratory for further examination
and testing.

QURNA (PHASE 2) CONTRACT AREA
• Undisturbed Samples
Undisturbed samples were obtained at (2 – 3) meter intervals or change of strata to cover all
layers.
Thin wall tube samplers (Shelby Tube) used according to (ASTM D-1587-11) for obtaining
undisturbed samples.
After extraction, the samples were trimmed off, capped with paraffin wax, and sealed
properly at both ends.
The samples were then dispatched to the laboratory for further examination and testing.
In the course of drilling work, the consistency of the soil was measured at several depths by
Standard Penetration Test (SPT).
The test involves recording the number of blows of 140 lbs. (63.5 kg) Standard Hammer with
a 30-inch (76 cm) drop to drive the 2-inch (50.8 mm) diameter Standard Split Spoon Sampler
into the soil a distance of 12 inches (30.5 cm).
The SPT number has be corrected for various parameters are recommended by the references,
and the following table summarize the correction factors:

The subsoil strata encountered at the investigated locations are detailed on the borehole logs
enclosed in Appendix “B” which also includes the position of samples, standard penetration
test results and ground water level at the time of boring together with the stratification of soil
along the depth for investigated area.
The soil profile along the explored route which covered by Nine (9) boreholes at depths of
(7.5 – 8.0) m along the Pipeline routes from CPF to WP#11, is basically consisted of the
following soil layers described below
• Medium to stiff close to surface weakens with depth to soft and very soft with
brownish and grayish appearances in colors, (Sandy) fat to lean Silty CLAY with shiny
traces of soluble salts and black spots of organic matter together with rusty traces of
iron oxide compounds & white tiny pieces of marine shells.
The above description indeed, is a general overview for the subsoil profile and more detailed
description is presented in Appendix “B” attached hereinafter.
From the values of specific gravity, passing # 200 sieves, consistency indices and according
to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), the Silty CLAY soil layers are classified
as CH – CL, i.e.; Silty CLAY with high to moderate plasticity.
The water table was encountered, as observed during the time of exploration at depth of (1.50
– 2.5) m, below the existing ground level. The water level measurement was conducted
according to ASTM D-4750. A seasonal fluctuation of (±1.0m) is anticipated.

Since structural damage may result from soil failure (collapse) as well as from excessive
settlement, the following criteria must always be used in evaluating the bearing capacity:

The most reliable values of allowable bearing capacity which are adopted in this report was
those values which evaluated from paragraph a, b, c & d and then taking the most critical
value (minimum) to be the convenient allowable bearing capacity.
Total settlement computation of foundation was calculated for net loading obtained by
subtraction off overburden pressure from gross loading. In this case gross loading,
represents intensity of vertical dead load and a half of live loading at the base of a
foundation.

A discussion of the results that are derived from field and laboratory testing carried out on
site is as follows: -
Soil mechanics is the basis of foundation design. Application of soil mechanics to foundation
design is necessary to study the stress distribution, and engineering properties of subsoil
material.
The sites subsoil consists mainly of the (Sandy) Silty CLAY layers, listed in detail in Clause
(4.0) above and detailed further in Appendix “B” attached hereinafter.
Shiny traces of soluble salts and black spots of organic matter together with rusty traces of
iron oxide compounds & tiny pieces of marine shells, are frequently distributed within the
strata.
The water table encountered at depths in the range of (1.50 – 2.50) m below the existing
ground level (NGL), which is considered in shallow to mid-range of depth.
The fluctuation of water table with the seasons could be observed (rising during spring). The
zone immediately above water table is greatly affected as far as strength and compressibility
are concerned. As moisture increases, the strength decreases and compressibility increases.
The saturated soil condition below the water table makes the problem of settlement
significant as consolidation is a process of graduated decrease of the water content from
saturated soil under constant load.
Settlement of structures is governed by imposed loads, soil response to load and change in
environment.
Organic matter was found in the soil in many forms and in considerable amounts (up to ≈
13%) in association with soluble salts (up to ≈ 6%).
20
EPC FOR PRODUCED WATER TREATMENT AND WATER
INJECTION FACILITIES EXPANSION (PHASE 1) AT THE WEST
QURNA (PHASE 2) CONTRACT AREA
The presence of organic matter & the soluble salts in such significant amounts may cause
significant changes in the properties of the soil especially strength-wise. The effects on fine
grained soils may be more obvious and such alteration could be noticed through color and
odor of the subsoil and thus a suitable remedy without exceeding the proper bound of the
safety may be required.
To avoid problems of foundation due to fluctuation of water table with the seasons, and
percolation of water into the Silty CLAY layer during rainy season, which in turn causes
settlement problems and lead not only to decrease in the strength and bearing capacity of
foundation, but lead also to an increase in potential on collapse, the following precautions
should be taken into consideration:
• Using efficient drainage and water discharge system for rainwater away from footing
zone.
• All concrete work in contact with soil shall be coated with bituminous material, in
addition to the use of Type V Sulphate resisting Cement.
• Pipes should be well fixed and laid then covered all around with permeable filter
material to avoid any leakage problem.
The results of swelling characteristics of soil were evaluated from odometer consolidation
device shows that the topsoil layer have slight to moderate tendency to swell in the range of
(10 - 30) kPa.
In general, to avoid problems associated with foundation works on such a soil, two provisions
are usually considered:
• Making the structure resistant to damage from soil movement by strengthening the
structure to withstand movement, or
21
EPC FOR PRODUCED WATER TREATMENT AND WATER
INJECTION FACILITIES EXPANSION (PHASE 1) AT THE WEST
QURNA (PHASE 2) CONTRACT AREA
• Through compacting the topsoil layer and/or the zone beneath the base of footing after
the excavation work prior to laying the sub-base layer
Also, in order to ensure the durability of the foundation in the long term, the following points
must be well-considered and thoroughly paid attention to in the design process:
1. A factor of safety equal to three (3) is adopted for all calculations of bearing
capacity formulae which is acceptable value.
3. One of the most practical and economical methods is through the use of
compaction control for the backfill of the zone around the foundation after being
laid, with well compacted clayey layer of low permeability.
22

INJECTION FACILITIES EXPANSION (PHASE 1) AT THE WEST
QURNA (PHASE 2) CONTRACT AREA
Taking into consideration the site condition, the soil properties, the type of the structures, the
loading distribution and the discussion of test result as explained in detail in the previous
section, it was found that shallow foundation (refers to trenches for UG buried Pipes)
considered as an alternative for the Pipelines’ based on the pressure imposed by the
superstructures to the subsoil.
Due to the lack of detailed information pertaining to the load and dimensions of the structures
to be constructed at the proposed site, the analyses mentioned in section (5.0) are made to
determine the allowable soil bearing capacity for the suitable foundations.
The allowable net soil bearing pressure for the shallow foundation with enough rigidity
placed at depth of (1.0 - 2.0) m below NGL cast on a well compacted sub-base layer having
thickness of at least (0.5) m are varies widely from location to another and was evaluated to
be on the order of (50 - 70) kPa, provided that the total and differential settlement remains
within the permissible limits depending on the structure type and purpose of use.
The above allowable net soil bearing capacity were evaluated using a factor of safety of (3.0)
against bearing capacity failure, which means, the contact pressure will be sufficiency low in
magnitude to keep load-induced deformation within the elastic range of the supporting soils.
The total settlement for different structures can be evaluated when the design applied
pressure; foundation dimensions and depth are provided. However, the differential settlement
shall be about 50% of the expected total settlement.
In order to conduct the design work for the structural foundation which involves the type of
the foundation, it is always essential to furnish the subsoil physical parameters to perform the
design calculations efficiently, therefore; the following table (7 – 1) summarizes the basic
subsoil parameters:

8.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Shallow foundation could be used for Pipelines provided the applied load stress does
not exceed the allowable bearing capacity and settlements remain within permissible
limits with the conditions set in items (2) below are to be implemented before
construction of the structures.
However, due to the interaction in design between the geotechnical and structural
aspects, the final decision in type and depth of the foundation is the designer’s choice.
2. As mentioned in item (1) above, for shallow foundations, a layer of compacted sub-
base according to the specification with thickness of at least (0.5) m should be placed
beneath the base of shallow foundations with following requirements:
• The value of CBR not less than 35% (ASTM D1883) at 95% of the max dry
density established according to (ASTM D1557)
3. It is recommended to fill the zone around the foundation with a well compacted clayey
layer of low permeability after (ASTM D-1557) to confirm the required relative
