Our Takeaways from the talk:
Rahul Mehrotra, founder of the firm RMA Architects, his works and
principles and various conservation projects and environmental issues
from 1884 to 2004.
The restoration of the Chowmahalla Palace Complex, Hyderabad, Taj
Mahal Visitor Centre, Agra, Library for the School of Architecture,
Ahmedabad, and Hathigaon in Jaipur are some of his major works as an
architect.
Adding to this, he mentions the city of Mumbai and how the ‘maidans’
are used as a ground to play sports, to conduct marriage functions, or to
celebrate festivals, while permanent structures like malls and Olympic
stadiums are now unused and left abandoned.
One of his works includes a social housing project where the basic frame
was constructed initially and over time the families took over to extend
their homes. This was based on the concept of incremental housing.
He has designed the "Siamese Towers", a workshop building at the
school of architecture and faculty buildings at the Pontifical Catholic
University of Chile.
He won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2016, and also, he was the
director and curator of the Architecture Section of the 2016 Venice
Biennale.
Ar. Aravena concluded the talk by talking about how the force of nature
and the force of common sense must come together and should possess
the conversion to form.
