IELTS LISTENING 11A – MULTIPLE CHOICE

LESSON 3: - LISTENING SECTION 3

- TIPS FOR MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS
I. SECTION 3
- A discussion between 2 to 4 speakers (e.g. between 1 or more students and/ or a university teacher)
- The topic is academic.
- Types of tasks: flow-chart, multiple choice, labeling a diagram.
- 10 questions
II. MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS
1. Types: 2 types (dạng 1: chỉ có một câu trả lời đúng cho mỗi câu, dạng 2: có nhiều câu trả lời đúng cho mỗi
câu)
2. Strategies:
- Spend a certain amount of time to read all the questions and options.
- Underline the key words and say the words silently to yourself to fix them into your mind => you will easily
recognize them when you hear the recording.
- Normally, the options are usually paraphrased, so they do not contain the exact words you hear. They use
synonyms, so always actively look for the synonyms of the key words you have underlined.
3. TIPS
- Read through the answer options
o Highlight similar options so you don’t get confused
o Think of paraphrases
- All answer options will probably be given in the recording
- Don’ think that the first answers you hear is the correct one –keep listening
- Watch out for answers that are given and then taken away by the speaker
- listen for the word “but” or “however”. This can mean a negative is coming, which means it might not be
the right answer
- If you think an answer is correct, put a tick but listening to make sure it is right
- You can write on your question paper so use ticks and crosses for right and wrong answers.
- You may not hear the exact words in the answer options – answers might be a paraphrase
- Your answer should be a letter not a word – be careful when you transfer your answers.
4. Notes
a. You might hear all of the answer options mentioned. So listen carefully for which one is the right answer.
b. You may hear synonyms rather than the same words in the questions.
E.g. lease -> rent
c. Anticipate distractors. The speakers may give an answer, and then change their minds.
E.g. I think bank transfer would be easiest. -> Actually, no, credit card would be better for me.
(Note: Đối với dạng có nhiều lựa chọn, vì câu hỏi paraphrase rất nhiều, dặc biệt ở Section 3 nên cố gắng
take note càng nhiều key words càng tốt => đọc lại key words và chọn đáp án)
- Practice makes perfect! Practice this type of question as much as possible because it is one of the trickiest.
After doing the listening tasks, use the recording to do Listening Dictation task (chép chính tả để luyện tập
khả năng nhận biết từ vựng, synonyms, các bẫy và đáp án).
Suggested strategies:
- Read the instructions very carefully to know how many options you have to choose
- Read the questions very carefully, underline key words (Wh-words, Nouns, Noun phrases)
- Read all the options carefully, underline key words

Note:

- Listen to the beginning part of this section carefully
