MODULE 2: CELLULAR TRANSPORT

SELF-ASSESSMENT 1: Engage part
A. I simply think that they have differences in the DNA that commonly depends on the family’s
blood. So, maybe the tall guy has tall parents and the short guy has short parents.
B. This process is called diffusion whereby gases move from an area from an area of high
pressure to low pressure. An example is external respiration.
C. This process is called osmosis by which water molecules diffuse across a cell membrane
from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
D. This process is called Transpiration
Because plants must exchange gases through their stomata, closing them prevents plants
from taking up carbon dioxide (CO2).

SELF-ASSESSMENT 2: Potato experiment

A. Draw and label your before and after set up. (8 points)
Before set up After set up
The one in the regular water looks like a The color of the salted water one is dark
nice white freshly cut piece of potato. the brown; not a nice image of how you
regular water one again feels firm and would like your potatoes preserved. The
crisp (try to break the piece, it snaps! saltwater potato is bendy and doesn’t
snap at all.

B. What changes have you observed? List down at least three (3) significant
observations. (3 points)
⮚ The potato in salt water is more bendy and doesn’t snap at all.

⮚ The potato dunked in saltwater had a brown water color which is not pleasing to
the eyes.
⮚ All the water inside the potato is almost drained.

C. What may be the reason or process that brought about those observations or
changes? (3 points)
⮚ All the observations listed above are mainly about the saltwater they are placed
in.

⮚ Osmosis is the primary reason for the changes of the potato.

⮚ Water diffusion of the potato’s cell.

D. What conclusion can you deduce to relate the result of this experiment to our topic
on cellular transport? (3 points)
⮚ results showed that the chips gained mass in water and low sugar concentrations
but lost mass in high concentrations of sugar.

⮚ This is what I predicted in higher sugar concentrations because in these solutions

the water will move out of the potato cells by osmosis.

⮚ Water molecules are observed to have moved from the region where they are
highly concentrated to the region where they have a low concentration through a
semi-permeable membrane in the cells of the potato.
E. List down at least three (3) importance of cellular transport. (3 points)

⮚ As cells proceed through their life cycle, a vast amount of exchange is necessary
to maintain function.

⮚ Transport may involve the incorporation of biological molecules and the

discharge of waste products that are necessary for normal function.

⮚ Purpose of cell transport is to move molecules into or out of the cell.
