MATH 313 ACTIVITY

1. FUNCTION
A function is rule for a relationship between an input, or independent, quantity and an
output, or dependent, quantity in which each input value uniquely determines one output
value. We say the output is a function of the input.

2. DOMAIN AND RANGE

Domain: The set of possible input values to a function.
Range: The set of possible output values of a function.
3. INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
The independent variable is the cause. Its value is independent of other variables in your
study.

4. DEPENDENT VARIABLE
The dependent variable is the effect. Its value depends on changes in the independent
variable.

5. ONE TO ONE FUNCTION

A function is called one-to-one if no two values of x produce the same y. a function is
one-to-one if whenever we plug different values into the function, we get different
function values.

6. COMPOSITE FUNCTIONS
Composite function is generally a function that is written inside another function.
Composition of a function is done by substituting one function into another function.
For example, f [g (x)] is the composite function of f (x) and g (x).

7. FUNCTIONAL NOTATION
An equation involving x and y, which is also a function, can be written in the form y =
“some expression involving x”; that is, y = f (x). This last expression is read as “y equals
f of x” and means that y is a function of x. This concept also may be thought of as a
machine into which inputs are fed and from which outputs are expelled. For each domain
value input, there is a range value output.

8. ODD FUNCTION REVENUE FUNCTION

Odd Function-A function f is odd if the graph of f is symmetric with respect to the origin.
Algebraically, f is odd if and only if f(-x) = -f(x) for all x in the domain of f.
Revenue Function-A formula or equation representing the way in which particular items
of income behave when plotted on a graph.
9. EVEN FUNCTION
A function f is even if the graph of f is symmetric with respect to the y-axis.
Algebraically, f is even if and only if f(-x) = f(x) for all x in the domain of f.

10. POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION

A polynomial function is a function that can be expressed in the form of a polynomial.
The definition can be derived from the definition of a polynomial equation. A polynomial
is generally represented as P(x). The highest power of the variable of P(x) is known as its
degree. Degree of a polynomial function is very important as it tells us about the
behaviour of the function P(x) when x becomes very large. The domain of a polynomial
function is entire real numbers (R).

If P(x) = an xn + an-1 xn-1+.……….…+a2 x2 + a1 x + a0, then for x ≫ 0 or x ≪ 0, P(x)

≈ an xn. Thus, polynomial functions approach power functions for very large values of
their variables.
