Preparation and Standardization of 1 N Sulfuric acid Solution

OBJECTIVE:
1. To prepare and standardize 1 N sulfuric acid for use in the assay

MATERIALS:
- Sulfuric acid, C.P
- 1 N Sodium Hydroxide solution
- Phenolphthalein T.S
- Volumetric flask, 250 mL
- Pipet, 10 mL or 5 mL
- Reagent bottle, 500 mL
- Erlenmeyer Flask, 250 mL
- Acid buret
- Fisher stand

PROCEDURE:
A. Preparation
Using a pipet, add slowly 7.5 mL of sulfuric acid to about 200 mL of distilled water, while
stirring continuously. Add enough water to make 250 ml.. Allow to cool.

B. Standardization
Into an Erlenmeyer flask transfer from a buret 20 mL o sulfuric acid to be standardized. Add 2
drops of phenolphthalein, t.s; then slowly add from a buret the previously standardized sodium
hydroxide until a light pink is obtained, while swirling constantly.

Calculate the normality using the ff. formula:

V acid x N acid =V base x N base
V x N NaOH
N H 2 SO 4= NaOH
V H 2 SO 4

QUESTIONS:
1. How would the standard solution of sulfuric acid be stored?
2. What is the other method of standardizing sulfuric acid solution?
3. Give the chemical reaction involved in the standardization of 1 N sulfuric acid
4. If 18.50 mL of 0.1173 N Sodium Hydroxide and 20 mL of H2SO4 were utilized to reach
the endpoint of titration, calculate the normality of the acid.
5. What is the volume of the standard base solution (0.9520) if it consumes an exactly
25.00 mL of 0.9781 N sulfuric acid during titration?
