CHEMISTRY PROJECT 1.

Prepare the list of various organic acids and bases

present in fruits and vegetables.

ACIDS

1. Citric acid – present in citrus fruits like lemons, lime, oranges etc. Also, in
tomatoes, pomegranates, grapes, berries, and pineapples.

2. Malic acid – High levels present in apples. Also in bananas,

pomegranates, grapes, berries, tomatoes, and broccoli.

3. Oxalic acid – in green leafy vegetables and beets.

4. Ascorbic acid – Also known as Vitamin C. present in citrus fruits, berries,

green leafy vegetables, green peppers, and tomatoes.

5. Tartaric acid – Grapes, tamarind, apples, apricots, and bananas.

BASES
1. Bases are oxides or hydroxides of metals. In fruits and
vegetables, the inorganic nutrients like calcium, magnesium,
potassium, sodium, zinc (metals), sulphur and phosphorus
(nonmetal) occur naturally.
2. The plants require these nutrients for their growth which is absorbed
from soil or fertilizers. The inorganic nutrients combine with water
or acids and are taken in in form of oxides, carbonates, nitrates,
phosphates, sulphates. When we eat these fruits and vegetables
they provide natural source of these minerals.
3. The inorganic matter present in them decides its alkalinity or acidity.
If these bases react with acid they form its salt and water or if they
dissolve in water they give alkalinity.
4. Fruits that are highly alkaline are watermelon, dates, raisins,
bananas, grapes, etc. Legumes are believed to be highly alkaline
and all green leafy vegetables. They help to reduce acidosis.

CHEMISTRY PROJECT 2.

Write 3 everyday applications of

(i)Combination reaction

1)Oxygen combines with carbon monoxide and forms Carbon

Dioxide.
2) magnesium oxide combining with carbon dioxide to produce
magnesium carbonate.
3) iron combining with sulphur to produce iron(II) sulfide.
(ii) Decomposition

1)When a soda bottle is opened, carbonic acid breaks down to

produce water and carbon dioxide, which causes the fizz.

2)During the digestion of food in our body, carbohydrates, fats,

and proteins decompose to form many simpler substances.

3)Photographic films have a coating of silver bromide, which on

exposure to light splits into silver and bromine.

4)When hydrogen peroxide is applied onto a cut or wound, the

peroxide decomposes and forms oxygen bubbles and bursts.

(iii) Displacement

1)Thermite Welding

2)Steel Making

3)Extraction of Metals

4)Acid Indigestion

(iv) Double Displacement

1)Photosynthesis

2)Combustion

3)Rust

4)Metathesis

(v) Redox Reaction.

1)Respiration

2)Photography

3)Bleach

4)Corrosion
