Tape Drives for HP Libraries
– Tape drives available for midrange and enterprise
libraries
• SDLT 160/320
• SDLT 300/600
• LTO Ultrium 230
• LTO Ultrium 460
• LTO Ultrium 960*

160MB/s transfer

Drive Performance
With the recommended SCSI interface, the sustained native transfer rates
per drive are:
• 16MB/s for SDLT (1) 160/320 drives
• 36MB/s for SDLT (2) 300/600
• 16MB/s for LTO Ultrium 230 drives
• 30MB/s for LTO Ultrium 460 drives
• 80MB/s for LTO Ultrium 960 drives
– Up to twice these native rates with data compression
– Limit the number of high performance drives per bus
– Use separate SCSI HBAs for disk subsystem
– Use separate SCSI HBAs
• for each Ultrium 460 tape drive.
• for every two Ultrium 230, SDLT, or DLT tape drives.
– SDLT and Ultrium 460 support 2gb FC in addition to SCSI
– Ultrium 960 supports 4gb FC in addition to SCSI
– No more than 2 high performance tape drives per FC interface
– For optimum performance, the total PCI bandwidth needs to be more than double
the backup rate.
• Example: More than 200MB/s for a single Ultrium 460 tape drive.

Library Performance
• Native tape library performance based on drive type
Type of Drive Worm Native Number of Library Performance
Support sustained drives
rate
SDLT 160/320 no 16MB/s 2 114.4 GB/Hour native
229 GB/Hour compressed
SDLT 300/600 yes 36 MB/s 2 259 GB/Hour native
518 GB/Hour compressed
Ultrium 460 no 30 MB/s 2 216 GB/Hour native
(LTO Ultrium 2) 432 GB/Hour compressed
Ultrium 960 yes 80 MB/s 2 576 GB/Hour native
(LTO Ultrium 3) 1.15 TB/Hour compressed
HP VLS 6000 no 600 MB/s 1-64 2.2 TB/Hour
(virtual tape) (aggregate)
Note: To help keep the LTO Ultrium drive streaming, the HP Adaptive Tape Speed (ATS) adjusts to the data rate from the
source (also called Data Rate Matching).
LTO 2 supports 10-30MB/s (native)
LTO 3 supports 27-80 MB/s (native)

Logical Device Files (Host Access)
• To set up the library to operate under HP EBS:
– Identify the HP platforms supported by EBS.
– Install and verify the supported Fibre Channel HBAs.
– Install HBA drivers.
– Install supported HBA and/or library and drive firmware.
– Verify that the host is able to access the library drives
and robotics.
– Test with HP Library and Tape Tools
– Test with HP Data Protector Media Agents
– Test with HP Performance tools
