TASK 1: Solve for the mean μ, variance σ 2 of the population and the mean μ x and
variance σ 2x of the sampling distribution of the sample means. Show your complete
solution.
(You can write you answers in a separate sheet of paper, take a picture and insert it in
a word/pdf file.)
1. A population consists of the five measurements: 2, 6, 8, 0 and 3. Suppose samples of
size 2 are drawn from this population.

2+6+ 8+0+3
∑ x=
5
μ= ❑

μ=¿3.8

So, the mean of the population is 3.8

x x−μ ( x−μ )2

2 2 - 3.8 = -1.8 (−1.8 )2= 3.24

6 6 - 3.8 = 2.2 ( 2.2 )2 = 4.84

8 8 - 3.8 = 4.2 ( 4.2 )2 = 17.64

0 0 - 3.8 =-3.8 (−3.8 )2 = 14.44

3 3 - 3.8 = -0.8 (−0.8 )2 = 0.64

∑ ( x−μ )2= 3.24 + 4.84 + 17.64 + 14.44 + 0.64

∑ ( x−μ )2 = 40.8

40.8
∑ ( x−μ )2=
5 = 8.16
σ 2= ❑

So, the variance of the population is 8.16
