CHAPTER ONE : INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Project

Human life is very precious consist of very complicated structure and millions of
function . The health sector should provide the best medical facilities to the common
man . As Ethiopian is a developing nation in the field of health sciences and
developing a large scale of hospitals but facing a large number of problems in inter-
structure facilities. The basic working of various hospitals in Ethiopia is still on paper
based as compare to the hospitals in other Africa countries because there the
computer have put into assist the hospital personals and their work.

The concept of automation of the administration and management of hospital is now


should be implement in Ethiopia . Our project is based on the above concept I.e
automation of administration and management of hospital. Hospital management
information system (HIMS) provides the benefits of streamlined operations,enhanced
administration and control , superior patient care ,pharmacy,medical labs, strict cost
control.
HIMS is powerful flexible and easy to use and is designed and developed to deliver
real benefits to management of hospital. the new system will be having key benefits
over existing system such as; high performance due to the immediate updating
service provided by the system, access to fully detailed description about the patient
regarding their medical reports, reduce human effort. To do this project we use
different methodologies to gather the necessary information that are needed to
develop our project. The methodologies that we are used to gather the requirements
are interview and the existing system documentation.
1.2 Background of the Organization

Sr. Aklesia Memorial General Hospital was inaugurated by his Excellency Dr. KebedeWorku
the minister of health in the federal democratic republic of Ethiopia on January 2006.
Centrally located in Kebele 06,Woreda 02,Adama/ Nazareth town in the regional state of
Oromia, 100 km from the city of Addis Ababa Ethiopia. The hospital is managed by a team
of highly educated health care professional and is equipped with state of the art
technology.

Sr. Aklesia Memorial Hospital have the approach to provide healthcare of the highest
quality and ethical standards stem from the organization (hospital) belief that only through
satisfying internal (i.e. staff) and external (i.e. patients) customers, the organization
provide high levels of quality care to the patients. The organization commitment to a
quality organization from recognizing and respecting each individual’s unique healthcare
needs and is focused on anticipating as well as exceeding their future needs.

Sr. Aklesia general hospital has a state of the art laboratory with the latest equipment and
a highly-trained professional insuring all tests of the clinical specimens are in order, to
obtain the exact information about the health of a patient as pertaining to the diagnosis,
treatment, and prevention of disease.

Organizational Structure
1.3 Statement of the Problem

Sr. Aklesia general hospital faces different problems in services the community which affect the
efficiency of the center. These Problems are

 The current manual system has a lot of paper work , to maintain the records of patient and
service manually, is a time consuming job.
 Lack of immediate retrievals:-The information is very difficult to retrieve and to
find particular information (e.g. To find out about the patient’s history, the user has to go
through various registers). This results in inconvenience and wastage of time.
 Lack of immediate information storage: - The information generated by various
transactions takes time and efforts to be stored at right place.
 Lack of prompt updating: - Various changes to information like patient details or
immunization details of child are difficult to make as paper work is involved.
 Error prone manual calculation: - Manual calculations are error prone and take a lot
of time this may result in incorrect information. For example calculation of patient’s
bill based on various treatments.
 Lack of security for the records, anyone disarrange the records of the system
