INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Answer all questions.
2) Show your workings clearly

1. The table below shows the distribution of student’s marks in a statistics examination:
Marks 40-44 45-49 50-54 55-59 60-64 65-69 70-74 75-79 80-84
Freq. 3 4 7 9 5 14 12 9 12
(a) By use of the coding formula and an assumed mean of 57, find
(i) The mean of the students’ marks (3 marks)
(ii) The standard deviation of the students’ marks (6 marks)
(b) From the above data, determine
(i) The modal mark (3 marks)
(ii) The 67th percentile (3 marks)
(iii) The coefficient of Kurtosis (5 marks)
2. The masses of students are normally distributed with a standard deviation of 15Kg. If 3.6% of the
students have a mass above 112Kg
Calculate
i) The mean mass of the students (2 marks)
ii) The percentage of the students who have a mass above 76Kg. (3 marks)
3. A study was conducted on a group of students to determine whether there is a relationship between
their weights and their corresponding blood pressure:
Weight (X) 121 62 71 49 67 81 90 52
Blood 273 134 163 97 142 173 194 102
Pressure (Y)

If the study showed that the weight and blood pressure of the students are related,
i) Fit a simple linear regression model of 𝑌 𝑜𝑛 𝑋. (8 marks)
ii) What is the weight of the student whose blood pressure is 167? (2 marks)

4. The table below shows the number of days it takes a student to report to university for the new
semester after a short break. The number of days, X, is a random variable with probability mass
function given below.

𝑥 0 1 2 3 4 5

𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥) 0.07 0.15 𝑎 0.25 𝑏 0.15

i) If 𝐸(𝑋) = 2.77, determine the value of 𝑎 and 𝑏. (4 marks)

ii) Find the standard deviation of the random variable X. (4 marks)
iii) Determine the probability that the student will take at least two days to report for the new
semester. (2 marks)
5. The data below gives the ages of 11 2nd year students taking a statistic course: 21, 22, 27, 31, 29, 30,
26, 20, 25, 24 and 26. Construct a 95% confidence interval of the students’ mean age.
(5 marks)
