The state of New York is located in the northeastern region of the United States. New York is
bordered by Lake Erie and Lake Ontario on the west; the provinces of Ontario and Quebec in
Canada on the north; the states of Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic
Ocean to the east; and the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south.

This state encompasses 54,556 square miles, which are divided into sixty-two counties. New
York is the twenty-seventh largest state in the United States. The capital of New York is
Albany. The largest city is New York City, which is currently the most populous city in the
United States. Other large cities in New York include Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse,
Schenectady, Utica, Yonkers, Mount Vernon, and New Rochelle. Based on the 2010 census,

and farms. The major industries include finance, communications, international trade,

Both the state of New York and the city of New York were named for the seventeenth
century Duke of York, James Stuart. This area was originally inhabited by the Native
American tribes of Algonquian, Iroquois, and Lenape. It was claimed by Henry Hudson in
1609 for Dutch settlers, and they formed the colony of New Netherland, which was taken
2 over by the British in 1664. About a third of the Revolutionary War battles took place in this
state. In 1788, New York became the eleventh U.S. state.

Tourist attractions in New York include Ellis Island, the main facility for immigrants
entering the United States who arrived between 1892 and 1954. The Statue of Liberty is
located in New York and was given to the United States as a gift from France to celebrate the
centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. Niagara Falls is another popular
tourist destination, along with New York City.
