ENGINEERING DATA ANALYSIS
Four hierarchical levels of measurements
Nominal
-It is used for labeling variables, the “nominal” scales could also be called as “labels”, but
without any quantitative values. But for us to easily remember what “nominal” is, it is sounds
like “name” and nominal scales are kind of labels or “names”.
-Variables can be assigned as categorical
Examples
Ordinal
-From the word itself “order”, so basically it is the order of the values of which is significant.
With that, we could say that ordinal depicts ranking, arrangement, or “order”.
-Variables can be assigned as categorical.
Examples
INTERVAL
-It is like ordinal scale, but the only difference is that in interval scale has also the exact
differences between the given values. For us to easily remember what interval scale is, the
“interval” itself means “space in between” it is the important thing to remember that interval

scales not only tell us the order but also the exact value between each item. With that, we
could say that interval scales reveal more information than the ordinal scale.
-Variables can be assigned as numerical.
Examples
Temperature
80 °C degree
45 °C degree
25 °C degree
-10 °C degree
RATIO
-It also reveals the order, the exact value between units and have an absolute zero which allows
for a wide range of both descriptive and inferential statistics or inductive statistics to be
applied. Height and weight are good examples of ratio variables.
-Variables can be assigned as numerical.
Examples
Mass
80 kg
40 kg
10 kg
0 kg
