METHOD STATEMENT DEWATERING

1. Introduction and Scope

This method statement provides the controlled sequences of work, methodology and safety precautions
that will be used to complete the Dewatering works. The content of this method statement reflects the
findings of the relevant risk assessment.

2. Location of Activity
outside of the building.

3. Scope of Work.
The method statement covers all activities related to the Dewatering works.

General Description
The purpose of this Method Statement is to give a general outline of the methodology that will be used
for Dewatering works s at, The WTC to identify the risk associated during the Dewatering works and to
identify the quality control system to ensure full compliance with the client’s requirements and as per
the project specification.

The works shall be executed in accordance with the following methodology and sequence;

1. Procedure

 Clearance shall be obtained from employer’s representative that the work area to proceed and
stating conditions & purpose of access, inclusive of topographical & terrace soil compaction
results, and highlighting all known existing services and hazards.

 Ensure that the instruction / information shall be obtained from employer’s representative when
excavating in the area of existing structures and/or underground facilities (if any), as per the
project site regulations.

 Care shall be taken to prevent dust being nuisance to the public, neighbours and other work at
site during dewatering.

 Care shall be taken to protect all existing structure & utilities during excavation and dewatering
works.

 Barricades shall be placed around all open excavations except where active work requires
opening of such devices and then only such portion of the barricade needed for work access will
be removed.

 Danger sign shall be provided and warning sign shall be written in English/Arabic and/or Hindi,
in day and night.

2.Prerequisites

 All the personnel shall work to the HSC and Area engineer’s instruction only and the same shall
be followed during the operation on progress.

 Continuous monitoring personals shall be employed to monitor all through the activity and plant
and equipments

3.Dewatering System

 Excavation should be kept free from water and arrangement shall be made to remove and dispose
of all water from every source entering the excavations and maintained at all times during
construction.

 Grading shall be done as may be necessary to prevent surface water from flowing into trenches or
other excavations, and any water accumulating therein shall be removed by pumping or by other
suitable methods. Pipes or flumes at such places as not to cause pollution of steams, waterways or
land shall discharge water from pumping, de-watering or other process.

4.Proposed Method

Our survey of likely water flow indicates that dewatering should be executed by a well
point system incorporating quantity one off diesel driven 6’’ vacuum assisted dewatering pumps
systems (pumps and accessories like headers, well point etc for a maximum of 100 metres for
normal conditions; more or less linear meters may be considered depending the actual
dewatering need & water permeability), each with maximum capacity 350 M3 / hour and
maximum discharge head of 30 Meter.

Dewatering is required for a maximum excavation depth of 7 meters from the existing
ground level. The system, installed around the site, will incorporate full sets of well points and
all associated required materials to draw the water from the ground, along with discharge hoses
from the pumps to the water storage lagoon area adjacent to the well point approximately 500
meter away.

The system, installed around the site, will incorporate full sets of well points and all
associated required materials to draw the water from the ground, along with discharge hoses
form the pumps to the lagoon, located adjacent to point of discharge, or other agreed discharge
solution following discussion with the EMPLOYER’S REPRESENTATIVE responsible for
execution of the ground works. 2nd stage dewatering may be required if the dewatering has to go
below 4.5 – 5 meter below the existing water table.

Well point dewatering systems will be installed 500 linear meter X 2 sides in one stage
depending on the requirements. Each system will be approx 70 – 80 meters depending on the
water content in the area.

5.Prevention of Seepage

Up to 10 systems of 6’’ dewatering pumps along with accessories will be on the existing
ground level 1-2 meter outside the perimeter. They may be conveniently placed that access to the
lagoon. The pumps are place in the centre of the system so that the vacuum is equally divided
among to well points. This makes it conducive for the drained water to be sucked out of the
ground in a uniform pattern to make the draw down and control the seepage. This placement will
make the soil dry accordingly. The pumps may be reduced to two, depending the seepage of
water. This can be done by adequately placing the pump again at the centre of the system and
locking with male & female end caps.

One end of 6’’ Suction hoses will be connected to the pump inlets & other end
connected to the 6’’ X 6 meter headers pipe with 6 X 2’’ inlets with the help of the ‘T’ piece.
The 2’’ X 6 inlets of the header pipes are connected with the 2’’ quick action Millar fittings
along with the swing hoses and are connected to 2’’ X 6 meter uPVC well points. Discharge
hoses from the pumps will discharge the water up the point of discharge to the sever line.

Depending on the soil conditions the well point spacing is suggested as 1m. Installation
will be made by high pressure jetting or drilling dependence on the soil density. 6’’ X 6 m
drilling is suggested to be hired & made standby for possible requirement. Filter packs (6 mm
washed aggregate) will be required around each well point. Normal width 1-2 M will be required
to locate the pumps, header pipes, well points and swings required for the well point dewatering
system.

Day and night monitoring for the dewatering system has to be provided. After the system
is completely installed and nominally allowed for 1 week for dewatering, the area of the ground
will start to show the dryness. The well point systems at all ends are likely to kept operational, as
long as it is required by the site conditions.

Dewatering services will be provided in accordance with the specification & guidelines
from project engineer by EMPLOYER.

Dewatering will commence, continue & cease as per written confirmation received from
the EMPLOYER’S REPRESENTATIVE.

 Under no circumstances will permission be given for the discharge of groundwater into the
proposed lagoon until to receive written confirmation from Employer Engineer.

 Lagoon for the storage of groundwater are permitted, they will be suitably protected with fencing
and attended by day and night to prevent access by the general public and will not be
sited adjacent to near structure. Approved means of preventing the formation of
mosquito larvae on the surface of the lagoons will be employed.
