CHAPTER I

Introduction

Time is like a sword. If you will not cut it, it will cut you. Many Senior High School

students come late to school and as a result; academic subjects will be affected as well as the

grades, and they will be able to miss classes as it affects their class performance. That is why

every Senior High school student should eliminate the cause regarding tardiness.

A tardy student presents a lack of responsibility. Being tardy all the time to class is a sign

of carelessness and a waste of time. Being on time is not only a duty for students, but also a part

of good manners, respect and reputation. Also, student should know how to value and manage

their time and do their best and not to be tardy at many times. Tardiness is not much of an issue

for students nowadays because for them it is just a normal thing.

Basically, human beings are the most difficult to manage. However, some students are

late to class on a regular basis. Thus, there are number of hidden reasons or excuse such as, that

prevent them being punctual attending the class. However, students come to class late, it can

interrupt the flowing of a lecture or discussion, distract other students, and learning teaching

process. Moreover, tardiness can become frequent and infect other students. However,

(Schneider, 1998) reported that the reality of classroom may be very different.

The student attendance policy has been developed as a role of the school’s commitment

to provide a supportive learning environment which authorize all students who have selected to

study to school to fulfill their absolute potential. ETC’s (2009) reported that the attendance and

punctuality policy clearly state that, “regular and punctual attendance is a paramount importance

in ensuring that all students have full access to the curriculum. Valuable learning time is lost
when students are absent or late”. Therefore, school expects students to attend all learning and

teaching sessions. Thus, students should come on time for classes.

A study by Kaye-Tierney (2009) examined chronic students’ lateness within a suburban

middle school context in Northeastern United States via an ethnographic exploration of the

frequently- late student, the attendance office and school staff. Another study by Hammill

Institute on Disabilities (Caldarella, Christensen, Young & Densley 2011), looked at decreasing

tardiness in primary school-aged students using written praise notes. The researchers found that

students who are frequently late to school often miss out important opening announcements and

academic activities. “Teachers can become frustrated as late students disrupt instruction, often

requiring reteaching of what they have missed. Tardy behavior can also negatively affect the

overall classroom environment.” The study says.

Finally, as for this research, the researchers want to know what factors affecting the

students’ tardiness and how to cope up with it.

Statement of the Problem

This part of the study aims to determine the factors affecting the tardiness of selected

Senior High school students of Queen Anne School S.Y. 2019-2020. Specifically, it aims to

answer the following questions:

1. What is the schedule of the respondents?

2. What are the factors affecting the tardiness of the respondents?

3. What is the number of late of the respondents?

4. Is there a significant difference on the number of late of the respondents?

5. Is there a significant relationship between factors affecting the tardiness and tardiness of

respondents?
Objectives of the Study

This part of the research, the researchers will show the purpose of this study to determine

the factors affecting the tardiness of selected Senior High school students of Queen Anne School

of Santa Rosa S.Y. 2019-2020

1. To describe the difference of schedule between Grade 11 and Grade 12

2. To determine the factors affecting the tardiness of the respondents

3. To determine the numbers of late of the respondents

4. To assess if there is a significant difference in the number of late of the respondents

5. To evaluate the relationship between factors affecting the tardiness and tardiness of the

respondents

Scope and Limitation

The study focuses on the factors affecting the tardiness of Senior High school students in

Queen Anne School of Santa Rosa. The data collection will be conducted to ten percent of

the total of population of Senior High school students in Queen Anne School who will

represent the population. This study will not cover other problems that are not considered as

one of the factors affecting the tardiness. The other students which do not fall as part of

Senior High school students are not within the scope of this research. The study will be done

through the utilization of questionnaire the Senior High school students as a survey and

reference by their strategy.

Significance of the Study

The findings of the study is rebound to the benefit of society considering that tardiness or

being late in class has its ways to prevent from doing

Administration. This study will help them to know the factors affecting the tardiness of the

students. In this, they will understand the reason behind why students are often tardy and that

they can have actions on the academic performance of the students and, also to monitor and

supervise them always.

Teachers. This study is also beneficial to them as it encouraged them to seek help in

improving their student academic performances. A teacher who teaches many subjects this

will help them to create bring tools that can make their focus more in students.

Parents. This study will help parents for them to be aware about how they can help their

children in being tardy. They will help them their children and give them disciplinary actions.

Students. The study will serve as an advantage to the students as it will raise awareness on

them about how to cope up with their problem, tardiness, which will be stated at the end of

the study, will also encourage to do some necessary actions.

Future Researchers. The finding of the study will serve as a reference material and a guide

for them to conduct similar studies about how students will really prevent themselves from

being tardy in class.
