GIRL, BOY, BAKLA, TOMBOY

The movie “Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy” was released in year 2013. It was directed by
a brilliant and artistic director, Wenn V. Deramas. The movie focused about life of the
quadruplets who have been separated for long years. This quadruplets’ names are Girlie,
Mark, Panying and Peter and the roles are portrayed by Vice Ganda. Girlie and Peter grew
up in United States with their father while Mark and Panying grew up in Philippines with their
mother. Years passed by, the quadruplets reunited again when Girlie, Peter and their father
knew that Peter badly needs a liver transplant. The day that they met again, they are not that
interested to meet their twins but rather they just have a quarrel on each other. Peter needed
a liver donor but Mark’s liver is the only one that is compatible for him. Mark will only give his
liver but with conditions. He then make hardships for Girlie, Peter and their father. In the
process, Mark gave another chance to the family and look another light for it.

The said movie has its purpose to entertain the viewers using their sense of humor.
With the help of Vice Ganda, the movie became more humorous with his absurdity and he
did his job well done to make us laugh. It also persuade the viewers to accept and value
things, person and everything in our lives and the whole team gave us such a wonderful
movie and relatable scenes to apply those practices in real life. The film provides a strong
temptation for melodrama and Deramas think that it is more entertaining if he delivers more
punchlines than monologues and it made the film family-friendly and in good spirit at all. The
film somehow promotes gender equality knowing that this film consists of main characters
with different gender preferences and although it is alarmingly sexist, it’s all done in good
fun. Vice Ganda succeeded in portraying Girlie’s character. The American accent of Girlie
was so annoying at first but then, we’ll get used to it once the character throws up
punchlines. The bratty attitude also fits the character of Girlie while portraying the character
of Mark was not too hard for Vice because he fits in the heart and the character. In Panying’s
character, it is obvious that Vice studied and practiced very well the pegs of the role as
lesbian from actions to mannerisms, he did his job very well. Last will be the character of
Peter, I think this is the most sensational role among the four characters portrayed by the
main actor. We do not expect such an outcome like this but then, the physical appearance of
Peter really shocked the viewers and many of us started to love Vice as Peter. The choice of
characters are perfect for their assigned roles, the other supporting characters also proves
that they can bring the flow of the story by their skills to entertain viewers and some of them
are really good at throwing and exchanging lines even though they’re just young ones. The
movie for me is much better if they give more scenes about their love life and I think that’s
the only weakness that the movie has because they just only made few scenes knowing

that they can consider it because the movie is all about love, toleration and acceptance. The
soundtrack used to this movie “Whoops Kirri” found too diverting even for kids. The
cinematography has the perfect quality, and the editing also got my attention because we all
know that it’s hard to edit four characters in one person and make it quadruplets in single
frame and with that, it gave justice not just for the quadruplets but also for the rest of the
characters. It is a credit to the technically proficient team that made this happen.

Upon searching different reviews about the film, this Jed Chua caught my attention.
According to his review, the jokes failed to inch out any laughter 90% of the time and the
story is a bloated mess and the lead character struggles to cope with his other personas
well. He also said that what made this a horrendous experience is its shoddy makeup of
convoluted scenes, tasteless and tired jokes, blatant advertisements segments and bad
acting. But, all in all, I’m rating the film 10 out of 10 because they did a job well done from
characterization, settings, plot, cinematography and everything about the film. Maybe the
movie didn’t got the heart of some viewers and it is because we have different perspectives,
level of humor and taste of movie an I respect that. What more important is the whole team
finished their assigned roles and did their job to make the film more timely and relatable for
viewers in our generation.
