Planning the Implementation of Environmental Management System in A.B Blanco & Son,

Europe Company

Over the past decade, humankind has developed a growing concern for the increasingly

intricate environmental protection issues. The environment is a crucial component of the

development process and includes the interrelationship and connections between natural

resources and people. Consequently, ecological dereliction and pollution are caused by the

practical manifestation of development models, life and practices, and natural events.

Reciprocally, changes in the physical environment have adverse impacts on the socio-economic

status and quality of life. Informed by such concerns, A.B Blanco & Son, Europe intends to

introduce Environmental Management System (EMS) to help improve its environmental

responsibilities and performance. This report aims to describe the potential implementation and

monitoring phase of EMS in the firm. A description of the possible action plan to be taken is

explored with a set of objectives and targets amplified. Besides, the report proposes a measuring

and monitoring regime and highlights reporting and communication plan for implementing the

EMS.

Action Plan

The management of A.B Blanco & Son, Europe, needs to develop a promotion system

when implementing the EMS in the organization. The program can be achieved by establishing

an environmental management committee to be supervised and chaired by the managing director.

The committee will be tasked with developing goals and policies concerning the progress made

by the firm in environmental management. In the company's quest of promoting activities that

reduce environmental impact, measures will be put in place to ensure the firm obtains ISO

14001:2015 certification as provided in the United Kingdom laws. Lira et al. (2019) defined ISO
Planning the Implementation of Environmental Management System 3

standards are the set of measures that focus on conformance with established procedures, plans,

and policies in complying with relevant regulations.

ISO 14001 stipulates environmental standards to be met by a firm, which may result in

EMS certification by accredited bodies. An operation and auditing system will be synchronized

with fundamental tenets of the EMS being implemented in the manufacturing unit. The firm will

conduct independent third-party audits and internal environmental audits to ensure the EMS

implementation can be verified through ongoing improvements, confirming if all the

organization operations are compliant with the existing environmental regulations in the United

Kingdom. In the context of A.B Blanco & Son, Europe, the ISO 1400:2015 will be implemented

in seeking accreditation from environmental regulation bodies such as the Environment

Agency (EA).

The organization has few workers with the management having only the manager as the

head. The manager will need to establish a working committee with three members from the

workforce to facilitate the implementation of the action plan items. The responsible individuals

for implementing the action plan will include; the manager, members of the committee and the

workers. Regular meetings will be scheduled and minutes kept for tracking the progress

assignments and the commitments towards implementation of the EMS. The action plan will be

discussed, resolved through routine monitoring and measurement of data. Elevations will be

made where necessary. Table 1 below outlines the proposed implementation action plan in A.B

Blanco & Son, Europe, company.

Moreover, the firm will take proactive measures to enhance its environmental risk

management initiatives. The mitigation will impede environmental accidents and emergencies,

including efforts to prevent possible occurrences through training. Another step that the company

will take include conducting environmental emission parameters to ensure legal compliance.

Meanwhile, emphasis will be placed on regular and open communication with stakeholders,

including communities living around the firm's manufacturing plant. The process will ensure the

organization's activities are understood by the community around the business site concerning

the environmental risk management strategies to be implemented. The commitment will include,

among other things scheduling public discussions on various environmental conservation

activities and the step that the company will undertake at the manufacturing site.

Objectives and Targets for the Company

A.B Blanco & Son, Europe, several target-specific objectives can be set while

implementing and monitoring EMS. The objectives are directly linked to the manufacturing

operations in the plant. The SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-

based model of setting will be used in setting the objectives.

Specific

 Using Inventory and guidelines from the Global Protocol for Community-Scale

Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories for assessing carbon Emissions

 Reducing the purchase of carcinogenic chemicals such as methylbenzene with

environmentally friendly solvent such as tetramethyloxolane in the manufacturing

process

 Implementing procedures and protocols for reducing Green House Emission production

from manufacturing materials

 Establishing baseline Green House Emission assessment protocols for minimizing air

emissions

 Constructing Landfill-gas (LFG) collection system for monitoring and flaring

Source: Interpretation in accordance to the data from the company

From the analysis it can be inferred that the verified environmental aspects of the company that

manufacturing process has different effects on the environment. The aspects can be classified as

follows:

A. Minimal impact on the environment and legislative requirement are met

B. Medium effect on the environment and legal requirements have been met partially with an

opportunity for improvement

C. Adverse impacts on the environment endangering compliance with legislative requirements

with urgent need for immediate remedy.

If the identified environmental aspects are to be synchronized with EMS presentation to

be monitored and measured according to ISO 14001 standard then several can be measured.

Form the classification highlighted above A.B Blanco & Son, Europe can be categorized under

group B. Thus, Procedures will be developed for monitoring essential characteristics of

manufacturing operations and activities which can have profound impact on the environment or

compliance standards. The performance will be tracked to ensure progress is made while targets
