STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

My name is Arsalan Abbas and currently I am 23 years old. I intend to

pursue my further studies in the field of Water Treatment and Desalination.

FAMILY BACKGROUND

I feel honored to introduce me and my family. I belong to well established

family. I have been brought up in much disciplined environment where values
and discipline has always been given priority. My father is a landlord. I have
three brothers and one sister. I’m eldest one and all of my younger siblings
are studying in Pakistan at different levels. My father will responsible for
study and living expenses in Australia. My father’s annual income from all
sources is more than 7.8 million in Pak rupees.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

I completed my Matriculation with Science subjects from Board of

Intermediate and Secondary Education, Multan in 2010. I secured good
marks and obtained Grade “A”. Then I took admission in intermediate Pre-
Engineering group and completed it in 2013 from Board of Intermediate and
Secondary Education, Multan Then, I completed my Bachelor of Science in
Chemical Engineering from University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore,
Pakistan in 2017.

After completion of my bachelor’s degree, I worked as Internee in Oil & Gas

Development Company Ltd from November 2017 to May 2018.

WHY MASTER OF ENGINEERING MAJOR IN WATER TREATMENT AND

DESALINATION

During my bachelor’s, I have undertaken numerous courses such as Heat

transfer, Fluid mechanics, Mass Transfer, Plant Design, Unit Process,
Thermodynamics and Chemical Reaction Engineering. These subjects
familiarized me to various imaginary ideas and approaches that are
extensively used in chemical industry but it was the field of water treatment
and desalination that captured my interest. After completing my Bachelor
degree, I started working on my future career path. Soon I realized that
Master of Engineering major in Water Treatment and Desalination is one of
the best degrees because future of the whole world is in the hands of water
engineers. Human beings are polluting air, water and soil since the world
came into existence. This pollution does not only effect environment but it
has also damaged all forms of life too. Master of Engineering major in Water
Treatment and Desalination is most important degree in the whole world
because, if the water is safe for drinking then there will be no diseases and
all the forms of life will be safe. We have always heard a phrase which is
“Prevention is better than cure”; it means that if the air and water are not
contaminated then different diseases will not spread and it is true to some
extent. After detailed discussion with my teachers and seniors, I have
decided to pursue a Master of Engineering degree in Water Treatment and
Desalination.

WHY NOT PAKISTAN?

I searched for different universities in Pakistan but no one university is

offering course relevant to water treatment. Moreover, in Pakistan, they
focused more towards theoretical exposure rather than practical
applications. Their resources and are not adequate and their center of
interest is course work rather than research work. In Pakistan, the
appreciation of education is not impressive. The quality of education in
Australia is better than Pakistan. The educational system of Pakistan is very
underrated and in fact none of the university of Pakistan is included in top
ranking universities of the world. The degree of universities of Pakistan is not
of much worth as compared to Australian degree. In Pakistan, the career
opportunities for International degree holders are very much higher as
compared to the local degree holders. That is why I have decided to go
abroad and return to my home country after getting an international degree
for my better future. Receiving a degree from abroad opens more
opportunities as compared to local studies especially a degree like Master of
Water Treatment and Desalination.
WHY AUSTRALIA & NOT OTHER COUNTRIES?
The countries I winnowed down were Australia, USA and the UK. I searched
on internet and explored about top education providers of Australia, USA and
the UK. In recent times after the elections there are higher controversies
within their own people and in different parts of USA and for an International
student that’s a down side of USA over and above the educational cost and
the living cost is too high. UK has a very well-established education system
and has been destination of many international students for many years. It is
home to some renowned and esteemed schools, colleges and universities. It
is still 2nd largest student destination. However, in recent years UK has been
facing a burgeoning issue of fake colleges and universities. According to an
article in Independent more than 30 universities and colleges have been shut
down by the Government in 2016 alone. From 2013 more than 400
institutions have been ousted. Such news and reports have hurt the image of
educational providers in Pakistan. Therefore, the degrees from UK do not
enjoy an esteem in Pakistani market as they used to do in past. The demand
of graduates from the UK has lowered as well.

I already had a little information about Australia before planning to study

abroad as it is important to examine own thoughts before taking the plunge.
It is essential for me to make an informed decision before I head towards a
higher education abroad. According to the latest report by the QS university
rankings, Australia has emerged as a leading country (3 rd best) known for its
quality education. Australia offers various options to choose from according
to my academic and cultural preferences. Here are a few reasons why I have
chosen to study in the Australia:

 Australia offers a diverse range of study options for international

students with more than 1,200 institutions and over 22,000
courses to choose from.
 Australian law promotes quality education and protection for
international students.
 Australia is the third most popular international student
destination in the world regardless of having a population of only 23
million.
 Seven out of one hundred top universities in the world are
Australian.
 FIFTEEN Nobel Prize laureates.
 People around the world rely on Australian discoveries and
innovations every day, Penicillin, IVF, Ultrasound, Wi-Fi, Bionic
Ear, Cervical Cancer Vaccine and the Black Box.
 Five out of thirty best student cities in the world are in Australia.

Australia is at the front position of new technology and innovations. Students

who study in Australia can take benefit of the country’s extraordinary
technology and research resources. Although my degree is not research
based but this research equipped system will provide me innovative learning
experiences. One of the main reasons for choosing Australia is its weather.
Weather of Pakistan is similar to Australian weather.

WHY MURDOCH UNIVERSITY?

After finalizing country as my destination for higher study, I started searching

for university which was offering my required course. I read so many articles,
Blogs and courses offered by different universities which are on the top of
Australian Universities. Determining my area of study, considering my
interests and ambitions, I compared some Australian universities like Monash
University, Curtin University, Murdoch University, University of South
Australia. I selected Murdoch University as Murdoch has affordable tuition fee
relatively and offering versatile options with an extensive curriculum in
Master of Water Treatment and Desalination. It’s a place where I will
experience world-class engineering facilities in a supportive learning
environment. Murdoch University is a dynamic and progressive community of
lecturers (73% faculty holding doctorate degree), researchers, students and
staff, all bound together by their hunger for learning, innovation and
research. Being rated 5 stars by its graduates that Murdoch is Australia’s top
ranked public university for student satisfaction and it's Ranked amongst the
top 100 young universities in the world. Murdoch provides the ideal learning
environment for students to reach their potential. Located in Western
Australia, its industry-relevant teaching and research, supportive study
environment and award-winning facilities help to prepare students to
become valuable contributors to the wellbeing and sustainability of
communities internationally. In addition to developing important academic
and professional skills at Murdoch, I will make new and possibly life-long
friends, whilst enjoying the welcoming culture and friendly environment.
Moreover, Murdoch has close collaboration with industry bodies means I will
be prepared for the engineering challenges of the real world.

Murdoch is located in Western Australia Perth the most livable city. I will be
able to enjoy a laidback lifestyle, calm weather and the incredible natural
beauty of the city.

SCOPE OF PROPOSED COURSE IN PASKISTAN

The scope of Water Treatment & Desalination is increasing day by day with
growing environmental concerns. In the public sector, the jobs have been
created at federal, provincial and local government levels. In Pakistan with
the 18th constitutional amendments, the subject of environment has been
devolved to provinces and provincial institutions have been setup. Pakistan is
facing water crisis and there is a lot of opportunities available of water
engineers. With the establishment of local bodies system, the opportunities
for environmental/ water engineers will further increase as most of the tasks
related to environment have been mandated to local bodies. Currently, all
provinces, AJK and Gilgat Baluchistan have environmental institutions at
district level. In the private sector, all multinational companies have jobs
related to environment and now local companies are also hiring
environmental and water engineers. There are opportunities in
environmental consulting services, where consultancy services are well
rewarded. The UN organizations, World Bank, Asian Development Bank have
established environment sections. Non-governmental organizations in the
development and conservation sectors are also hiring environmental and
water engineers.

Secondly after the start of Gwadar port and the beginning of CPEC project,
there is enormous growth for people having degrees in environmental and
water engineering. So, it is very rare that people have degree with
specialization in both areas and this will make me more employable in the
current circumstances. These facts clearly depict a bright future for me in
Pakistan after the completion of my proposed degree.

RESEARCH ON COMPANIES & EXPECTED SALARY

After completion of my degree, I will be able to work as Water Engineer,

Environmental Engineer and Project Engineer. My proposed degree will
prepare me for employment in the companies and agencies in which water is
the primary business, such as water utilities.

Many other industries also employ water engineers to manage their water
processes. These include: mining, horticulture, energy generation, oil and
gas recovery, livestock and agriculture production and processing, semi-
conductor and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and hospitals and health care
facilities.

I am looking forward to get a place as Water Engineer in one of the leading

organizations in Pakistan as mentioned below:

 OGDCL
 WASA
 Pak Arab Oil Refinery and many other companies relevant to my field.

All the above-mentioned companies have highly paid salary rate and for me
it would be a great opportunity to work with one of them. Water Engineer
with foreign qualifications are getting lot of job opportunities and are in high
demand.

INCENTIVE TO RETURN BACK TO PAKISTAN

After completion of my proposed degree, my objective is to hunt a

respectable job in Pakistan. I want to live and settle in Pakistan with my
family. My father is well settled in Pakistan and net worth of his assets is
approximately PKR 15 crore and I have handsome inherited share in his
assets. My parents played a vital role and always been my support in
pursuing my studies. They want to see me a successful Water Engineer in
Pakistan. After completion of my proposed program, I will come back to
Pakistan to serve my country and will do my best to fulfill my parents’
expectations. Some people think that when you have to support your family
it means you have to support them financially but I think that when you have
to support your family it means you have to support them mentally, morally,
physically and financially. I will be back and I have to be back because, being
the elder son, it is one of my duties to support my parents, guide my siblings
and help them in every aspect of life by residing with them. Secondly, I am
hopeful for successful professional career in Pakistan.
