Procedure 1

1. Construct calorimeter. Stack 2 styrofoam cups. Add stir bar. Cap with cork lid

2. Place assembled calorimeter on stir plate

3. Use clean graduated cylinder and measure approximately 50 mL of DI water

4. Pour DI water into calorimeter. Place used graduated cylinder into Wash/Waste bin

5. Add beaker of ice to calorimeter. Place used beaker in Wash/Waste bin

6. Turn on stir plate

7. Insert temperature probe into calorimeter. Monitor temperature

8. Click on the section of the graph that indicates the freezing-point of DI water. Record
freezing-point in Lab Data

9. Zoom out. Remove temperature probe. Place calorimeter in Wash/Waste bin


PROCEDURE 2.

1. Construct calorimeter. Stack 2 styrofoam cups. Add stir bar. Cap with cork lid

2. Tare balance. Weigh calorimeter on balance. Record mass in Lab Data. Return calorimeter
to lab bench

3. Use clean graduated cylinder and measure approximately 50 mL of DI water. Record exact
volume in Lab Data

4. Pour DI water into calorimeter. Place used graduated cylinder into Wash/Waste bin

5. Place weigh boat on balance. Tare balance

6. Use scoopula to weigh out approximately 1.5 g of magnesium chloride. Record exact


mass in Lab Data

7. Calculate moles magnesium chloride. Record in Lab Data

8. Add magnesium chloride to calorimeter. Place used weigh boat in Wash/Waste bin

9. Place calorimeter on stir plate to dissolve magnesium chloride. Turn on stir plate for a few
seconds and turn off

10.Tare balance. Weigh calorimeter with solution on balance. Record mass in Lab Data.
Return calorimeter to lab bench
Procedure 3. Measure freezing-point of solution 1

1. Add ice to calorimeter. Place used beaker in Wash/Waste bin

2. Weigh calorimeter with solution and ice on balance. Record mass in Lab Data.

3. Place calorimeter on stir plate. Turn on stir plate

4. Insert temperature probe into calorimeter. Monitor temperature

5. Click on the section of the graph that indicates the freezing-point of solution 1. Record
freezing-point in Lab Data

6. Zoom out. Remove temperature probe. Place calorimeter over sink and decant solution

7. Weigh calorimeter and remaining ice on balance. Record mass in Lab Data

8. Place used calorimeter in Wash/Waste bin

9. Calculate following and record in Lab Data

 Mass of ice added


 Mass of ice remaining
 Mass of melted ice
 Mass of water in solution (in grams and kilograms)
 Molality
 Freezing-point depression

1. Construct calorimeter. Stack 2 styrofoam cups. Add stir bar. Cap with cork lid

2. Weigh calorimeter on balance. Record mass in Lab Data. Return calorimeter to lab bench

3. Use clean graduated cylinder and measure approximately 50 mL of DI water. Record exact
volume in Lab Data

4. Pour DI water into calorimeter. Place used graduated cylinder into Wash/Waste bin

5. Place weigh boat on balance. Tare balance

6. Use scoopula to weigh out approximately 2 g of magnesium chloride. Record exact mass
in Lab Data

7. Calculate moles magnesium chloride. Record in Lab Data

8. Add magnesium chloride to calorimeter. Place used weigh boat in Wash/Waste bin

9. Place calorimeter on stir plate to dissolve magnesium chloride. Turn on stir plate for a few
seconds and turn off

10.Tare balance. Weigh calorimeter with solution on balance. Record mass in Lab Data.
Return calorimeter to lab bench
Procedure 5 Measure freezing-point of solution 2

1. Add ice to calorimeter. Place used beaker in Wash/Waste bin

2. Weigh calorimeter with solution and ice on balance. Record mass in Lab Data

3. Place calorimeter on stir plate. Turn on stir plate.

4. Insert temperature probe into calorimeter. Monitor temperature

freezing-point in Lab Data

6. Zoom out. Remove temperature probe. Place calorimeter over sink and decant solution
