1. Suppose you are to create a galvanic cell. You were told to use Pb and Cu as
electrodes and 1.0M Pb2+ and 1.0M Cu2+ as electrolytes. WRITE the oxidation half-
reaction (anode reaction), the reduction half-reaction (cathode reaction), and the
overall cell reaction.Include the potential.

Oxidation: Pb(s) ---> Pb2+(aq) + 2e-  Eo = + 0.13 V

Reduction: Cu2+(aq)+2e- → Cu(s) Eo = +0.34 V

Overall: Pb2+(aq) + Cu(s) → Pb(s) + Cu2+(aq) Eo = +0.47 V

2. Identify the oxidation half-reaction, reduction half-reaction and the over-all cell
reaction for the electrolysis of aqueous MgF2 given the following experimental
observations:
At the anode: formation of a colorless gas
At the cathode: deposition of some solid particles
For the half-reaction of water, refer to the lecture slides.

Cathode (-): Mg2+(aq) + 2e- -> Mg(s) Eored = -2.36 V

2 H2O (l) + 2e- → H2 (g) + 2 OH-(aq) Eored = -0.83 V

Anode (+): 2 F- → F2 + 2e- Eored = -2.87 V

2 H2O (l) → O2 (g) + 4 H+ (aq) + 4e− Eored = -1.23 V

Overall: Mg2+(aq) + 2e- -> Mg(s) Eored = -2.36 V

2 H2O (l) → O2 (g) + 4 H+ (aq) + 4e− Eored = -1.23 V

E0overall= -3.59
