1.1 Background of the study

INTRODUCTION

Motivation is an essential factor in the students learning process and

performance nowadays. The success of the students studying process is depending

on their motivation. Motivation leads them to reach their goals. “It leads to

increase the effort and energy in pursuit of those goals”,(Ormrod, 2011).

Therefore, motivation is the key to open their future success. Motivation has an

important role to influence the power of learning activity, but the motivation is

also influenced by the goals. If there is a higher goal, there is a bigger motivation

to reach the goal. Motivation also have functions to a activate and increase the
activity as an effort to reach the goals. “Motivation also can functioned to activate

and increase the activity”,( Sukmadinata, 2011), the students have a good

motivation, they will be more enthusiastic in the studying process and surely they

will get a better result than the students without motivation.

Parents provide a proper motivation that can help their students being

productive in school. Motivated students can give pleasure to their parents and
1
persistence in their studies. They tend to give more effort which required time in

their studies. However, the achievements of the students depend on how their

parents motivate them. Students need motivation from their parents to have a

strong desire in their studies. They give more effort in every presentation in order

to be achievers in school. Furthermore, it is important for parents to keep their

students motivated. In particular, most top learners are good in all subjects. Even

though they have failure sometimes but they did not give up yet. They give their

best in school. Students are very active in doing their task and ask questions if

there are things they do not understand about the discussion that’s why they have

the highest scores and grades. However, some of the top students are not fully

motivated by their parents but still possess great determination in their studies.

Parents motivate their students in a proper way. Educational attainment of

students can be improved when proper advice and motivation to the students are

provided (Malik & Asif, 2012). Parents are well educated and have superior

understanding on how to shatter a problem or know more effective motivational

techniques that can help their students to be more productive (Chohan & Khan,

2010). Students can perform better if they are rewarded and appreciated in their

Good did in school (Srivastava, 2018). In the study, the researcher intends to

know the levels and correlation between parental motivation and performance of

students in senior high school. The researchers conduct this study to know what

are the strategies of parents to motivate Grade 11 senior high students’ academic
2
performance at home amidst pandemic (COVID-19). This study is very important

to gain knowledge and understanding for the researcher about the two variables

especially parental motivation and academic performance of students specifically

senior high school students.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main objective of this research is to determine the strategies of parents

to motivate grade-11 (ABM) compassionate of las piñas national senior high

school-doña josefa campus towards their academic performance at home amidst

pandemic. As a result, this research will provide information of different parental

strategies and the students will have an idea on how they’re parents motivate them

in different ways. The effect of it to the students is they will strive hard in their

academic performance amid pandemic existence.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the possible strategies that parents do to motivate their Grade-11

(ABM) Compassionate Students during this pandemic?

2. What are the effects of not having motivation from their parents during this

pandemic?

3. What are the possible effects for a Grade-11 (ABM) Compassionate Students

of having a motivation from their parents despite of this pandemic?

4. How does these Grade-11 (ABM) Compassionate Students adapt those

motivations that they've got from their parents? 3

5. Does having a parental motivation can help to increase the academic

performance of Grade-11 (ABM) Compassionate Students?

1. 3 CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The major concept of this study is focused on parental strategies to motivate

grade-11 (ABM) compassionate of las piñas national senior high school-doña

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The major beneficiaries of this research study are:

Students. The main respondents of this research are the grade 11 (ABM)

compassionate students’ of las piñas national senior high school-doña josefa but

even they are the respondents of it they won’t cater all the findings and even

though the results of this research study. Therefore, all of the students can relate

to this study despite of being an elementary students’, junior and senior high

students’, and college students’ . Reflect as an eye-opener is one of the major

effect of this research study to every students whereas students should open their

eyes clearly to minimalistic details of their parents action towards to them

specifically, if they always think that their parents won’t support them because

they didn’t shows an action to support them.

Parents. Some of the parents are not a showy person but deep inside there hearts

they love their son/daughter wholeheartedly. This research study will also give a

major benefit to them especially if they’re not a showy person to their love ones.

“Actions speak louder than words”, is a famous quote but all of us needs an

assurance in every actions and that what students’ want to understand particularly
5
in their parents’ actions. Motivational words like “You can do it”, and

“Fighting”, coming from the parents can touch the hearts of their son/ daughter so

basically this study will also gives an idea to all of the parents that actions is not

enough, motivational words can do.

Researchers. This research study serves as a basis for further study or gives an

information. The findings of the study will be a good source of accurate and

useful information for them, they can also make this research study as their

reference.

Teachers. Aside from parental strategies to motivate Grade-11 (ABM)

Compassionate students’ at home amid pandemic, students’ academic

performance is one of the duties of the teachers since it’s also their

responsibilities to maintain the good academic performance of the students, so

basically this research study can help gradually the teachers by giving an idea to

maintain or even increase the academic performance of students’.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies on different point of

view of Grade-11 (ABM) Compassionate Students' how they're parents motivate

8
them that can help to increase their academic performance at home amid

pandemic. It attempts to integrate the parental motivation literature to further

more understanding in this phenomenon. It consists of two studies: Local studies

and Foreign Studies.

2.1 Local Studies

Parental motivation gives a good impact to every students since it is given

by their parents. This chapter presents different pertinent literature from the local.

Relevant literature that comes from the local studies tighten the validity of this

research.

A study conducted by Philemon and Mkulu (2020) on the impact of

motivation on students retention exposed that motivation is the heartbeat of

student retention.
It keeps students active and alive to remain at school until completion. Hence it

indicated that motivation stimulates them while in school by meeting their diverse

personal needs. Motivation that keeps pushing them to study adequately to

enhance it.

Parental involvement is one of the determinants of the academic success of

the students (International Engineering Journal for Research & Development,

2021). Thus, the COVID-19 pandemic affected the living conditions of societies,
8
specifically, the families. Therefore, it challenges the students with their parents

to be active in learning in-home while the isolation is relative to their success in

their educational goals. Moreover, the study investigates the relationship between

parental involvement and the academic performance of the 493 participants in

private schools in the Philippines. The study's statistical analysis resulted in a

significant relationship between parental involvement and students' academic

performance. Thus, the following conclusions were derived: The parents were still

in the process of developing their involvement in school, specifically, in this

challenging time. This revealed that the students performed well in class during

pandemic.

Parents motivation is essential in education to excel academically (Balacuit

& Inabangan, 2019). Regardless of whether the learners are extrinsic or

intrinsically motivated, it still would greatly help students challenge themselves to

be productive and active in participating in daily educational activities.

Parents play vital roles in the academically development of their children

(Tarroja, 2010). They have been described as family-centered and have been

observed to be close-knit to their children specifically in the Philippines for being

a family-oriented country (Tarroja, 2010).

Parental involvement must be suggested especially for those students’ who

9
are at imperilment on underachievement of academic performance (Goodall,

2018). The gap on how parents support and get involved in the learning of their

children are important.

It is a grateful benefit if the parents were there for the students, to guide and

support them, particularly during challenging school tasks, although this also pose

notable

impacts to parents’ and children’s well-being, relationship (Wang et al, 2020).

2.2 Foreign Studies

The family is usually the primary source of basic necessities, which is

enabled by the socioeconomic, environmental, and political conditions that exist.

the family structure, on the other hand, has an impact on the provision of

fundamental necessities to teenagers and as a result, on their school attendance

and attentiveness in class. the purpose of this study was to look into the role of

family structure and parenting in children's development.

According to Research & Reports UNICEF Global Chief of Education's

tips 25 August 2020 here are some ways to motivate students to study despite

pandemic. they should plan a routine together. make an effort to build a schedule

that includes age-appropriate educational programs that can be viewed online.

9
second is that you need to have open conversations. children should ask questions

and express their feelings. lastly, stay in touch with your children's facility. ask

questions and get more guidance. Parents always want the best of their children

and always want their children to live a better life than they did.

Parents provide as many resources as they can, but this can also be negative to the

child’s education. Parents

typically do not become involved with their children unless difficulty arises,

which then can lead to frustration

from the parents (Pomerantz, 2005).

Wlodkowski and Jaynes (1990) also consider factors influencing motivation

outside the school environment.

They present four major influences on an individual’s motivation to learn:

culture, school, the child as an

individual, and family.

Garrett (1995) asserts in a speech at the Oklahoma Administrator’s Conference

that "the smallest school in

America is the family", which illustrates the significant role that family has in

education and motivation of

students.

Pape (1999) states that "research also indicates that parents who are involved in

their child’s academic life have a

profound effect on the child’s ability to learn and help instill in them an
9
appreciation for learning that can last a

lifetime. Fager and Brewster (1999) discuss the benefits associated with parental

involvement as involving

improved academic performance, improved school behavior, greater academic

motivation, and lower dropout

rates. Wlodkowski and Jaynes (1990) list the following as benefits of a positive

relationship between teachers

and parents: the establishment of mutual trust; the expressed shared goal of the

best interest of the child; the

creation of a vehicle for open communication; and the clarification of an attitude of

collaboration and problem

solving rather than blaming. Unfortunately, parents and educators are often seen

holding one another at arm’s

length, uncertain of the role each should play.

In this study it tells how important parental support and motivation to students in

their academic performance Parental involvement can encourage children's and

adolescents' achievement in many ways. One way that parents can contribute

positively to their children's education is to assist them with their academic work

at home. ... Futhermore, research shows that the level of parental involvement

and motivating students is associated with academic success.

2.3 Synthesis

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed everyday life, imposing

unprecedented sanitary, political, economic, social, and educational challenges.

Home confinement and temporary school closures have also affected educational

systems worldwide (Reimers and Schleicher, 2020; World Bank Group, 2020).

The transition to distance learning placed a heavy strain on teachers, students, and

their parents (Cachón-Zagalaz et al., 2020; Hiraoka and Tomoda, 2020). The

rapid shift in the delivery mode of instruction and an uncertain future may have

led students to experience considerable challenges in maintaining their academic

motivation. However, to the best of the researchers knowledge, although some

evidence exists, for instance, on student’s learning habits during COVID-19

(Trung et al., 2020), there is no empirical evidence specifically on how the

COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictive measures, adopted by governments to

contain the new coronavirus spread, impacted students’ academic motivation and

learning across countries.

In the article of (Epstein 1997) Discussed how motivation can be improve

11
by means of successful partnerships between Students and Parents. While in the

32 strategies of (Lina Raffaelli 2014) article she discussed that a student needs a

positive learning environment for the students. These two articles have different

suggestions for the parents to improve student’s academic performance amidst

pandemic for them to learn and grow. By comparison these articles contains

similar information that can benefit student’s motivation and performance at

home by good parenting and healthy relationship

In this study, the researchers construct a qualitative and narrative method

to combine the results of primary studies we researchers analyzed different and

similar informations from articles such as strategies that will uplift student’s

motivation in amidst pandemic.

Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the general strategy on how the researchers evaluate

the data

given by the respondents’ to test the reliability and validity of this research study.

Research methodology consists of Research Design, Research Instrument,

Sampling Technique and Data Gathering Procedure.

12

3.1 Research Design

A qualitative phenomenological method was used in this study. This method

“studies or examines human experience through the description provided by the

people involved” (Ariola, 2014). The purpose of the study is to analyze and

describe the respondents’ perspectives, based on their experiences, to determine

the different strategies on how the Parents of Grade-11 ABM Compassionate

motivates them at home amidst pandemic. A survey questionnaire with open-

ended questions was used in collecting data from the respondents.

3.2 Research Instrument

This paper used a survey method via questionnaire to collect data from

the respondents.

Part 1 of the questionnaire collected data on the respondents’ profile.

Part 2 of the questionnaire collected data on the respondents’ experiences

to determine the causes and effect to Students on how their Parents motivate them

in their Academic Performance at home amidst pandemic.

13

Part 3 of the questionnaire are open- ended questions that collected data on

respondents’ insights about what are the common reasons why lack of motivation

can affect students’ academic performance at times of pandemic and what are the

good and bad effects of motivation. A copy of the questionnaire is found in the

Statement of the Problem.

3. 3 Sampling Technique

Purposive sampling technique was used in this study where the

“researchers use their good judgement in selecting the respondents who best meet

the purpose of the study” (Ariola, 2014). The prescribed criteria were: Senior

High School Students Grade-11 ABM Compassionate to be specific from Las

Piñas National Senior High School-Doña Josefa Campus, in a virtual setting by

using messenger, Digitally-based students whose age are between

16 to 19 years old. Five students who are in Grade-11 ABM Compassionate were

invited to participate in the study, during the pandemic academic year 2020-2021,

agreed to participate
14

3. 4 Data Gathering Procedure

Participants were contacted by chatting them through the use of

application “Messenger”. Each member of the research team message the

respondents which are those Grade-11 Compassionate (ABM) students at Las

Piñas City National Senior High School-Doña Josefa Campus where the research

will be conducted. The researchers know that there might be some difficulties that

may encounter since it’s just modular but the names will automatically appear

once they answered the online questionnaires (Google Forms) to prove that they

really answered the online questionnaires, this will prove that they really answer

the survey. Those participants are being informed and had given a consent before

answering the survey, the consent is included in the message before sending the

survey itself. In the consent, it is included that their personal information will stay

private and confidential.
