Test #1 Date: January 24, 2020
Name: ……………………………………………… Reg No: …………………
Instructions:
1. Time allowed is 90 Minutes.
2. Attempts all questions.

Question 1
A dc series has a per unit resistance of 0.05 based on rated voltage, rated current and rated flux as
reference quantities. Assuming the machine is unsaturated i.e kø in per unit = Ia in per unit, calculate:
a) The per unit speed and current when the torque is 0.5 p.u
b) The per unit speed and torque when the current is 0.5 p.u
c) The per unit current and torque when the speed is 0.5 p.u

Question 2
A dc shunt-wound (self-excited) generator rated at 220 V and 40A armature current has an armature
resistance of 0.25 Ω. The shunt field resistance is 110 Ω and there are 2500 turns per pole. A speed
range of 2/1 by field control is required. Neglecting the effect of armature reaction and brush drop and
assuming Ia = 0 on no load, calculate:
a) The value of the series field ampere turns required to cause the speed to fall by 10% from 500 rpm
on no load, when full load current is taken.
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑡 𝑛𝑜 𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑−𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑡 𝑓𝑢𝑙𝑙 𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑
b) If regulation is defined as 𝑥 100%, calculate regulation with this series
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑡 𝑓𝑢𝑙𝑙 𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑
winding in circuit and the shunt field set to give 1000 rpm on no load.
The following open circuit characteristics was obtained when running at 500 rpm with the shunt field
excited.
E.M.F (V) 71 133 170 195 220 232
Field Current(A) 0.25 0.5 0.75 1.0 1.5 2.0

Question 3
A dc motor runs at 1460 rpm when connected to a mains whose voltage is 315 V. The armature
resistance is 0.5 Ω while it requires an excitation of 0.8 A at a nominal point to produce a flux of 0.08
Wb/pole. The machine has an emf constant equal to 150 and has to be started by varying mains voltage.
Find the voltage that can be applied in order to limit the current to twice its rated value.
