The following questions are based on Unit – 1. Read the unit carefully and
answer the questions/solve the exercises given below.

Q.1 Read pages 1-14 carefully (the content is related to ‘academic writing’
various types of ‘essays’) and briefly answer the following questions (in your own
words). (10x2=20)
a) What is ‘descriptive’ essay? What are the essential characteristics of a
‘descriptive essay’? Write down a descriptive essay (of approximately 200
words) on ‘A Cricket match’.
b) Define ‘process essay’ as a special kind of writing. How it is different from
other types of essays? Provide one brief example of a process essay.

Q.2 Read pages 31-34 carefully (the content is about formal and informal styles of
writing) and decide what type of writing style (formal/informal) is used in
following sentences and how? (10)

i. Aslam needs to think about his decision now.


ii. Ferzana can get in touch with her mother if she likes.
iii. They cannot dare go against him.
iv. Umar started freaking out about the test.
v. When the cops arrived, the dacoit ran away.
vi. She pointed out towards the car.

The following questions are based on Unit – 2. Read the unit carefully and
answer the questions/solve the exercises given below.

Q.3 Carefully read the text titled as ‘Chronology of the Mughal Kings’ on pages 51-52
carefully. (10)

Now WRITE down a narrative essay about the Mughal Kings ‘Jahangir and his son
Shah Jahan’ by using appropriate SEQUENCE MARKERS. You are required to
use at least FIFTEEN sequence markers in your answer.

Q.4 Read the text titled as ‘A Day in the Life of nurse’ on pages 56-57 carefully. Also
read Exercise-9 given on page 58. (10)

Now write down a PARAGRAPH of about 150 words on ‘A Day in the Life of a
Dentist’. Follow the use of SEQUENCE MARKERS in your answer.

Q.5 Read the text titled as ‘The Evolution of computers’ given on pages 64-65
carefully. Now write down a paragraph (of about 200 words) on ‘the History of
Cricket’ in your OWN words and using appropriate SEQUENCE MARKERS.

The following questions are based on Unit – 3. Read the unit carefully and
answer the questions/solve the exercises given below.

Q.6 Read the text given on pages 73-88 carefully and answer the following questions
briefly: (5x2=10)
a) What is a classification essay? How is it different than other types of essays?
b) Create a tree diagram illustrating various types of buildings. Explain what
types of features have you used to classify these buildings?

Q.7 Read EXERCISE 9 given on page 96 (which is about the classification of teachers
into five types). Now WRITE a descriptive paragraph about the teachers of your
own school/college classifying them into various types of teachers. (10)

The following questions are based on Unit – 4. Read the unit carefully and
answer the questions/solve the exercises given below.

Q.8 Read about ‘Cause and Effect’ (as given on pages 107-111) carefully and WRITE
down a cause and effect essay of approximately 300 words on the topic of your
