T his book began with a short article I wrote in 2000 for Cell
Group Journal. Thereafter, I got busy with other responsi-
bilities and did not remember what I had written until some
point in 2010. Thank you, Randall Neighbour, for the opportunity
to get started down this path all those years ago. The ideas of this
book were birthed out of the input of so many that it’s hard to list
all of them. The seeds go back to some sermons given by Alan
Roxburgh and a class led by Alan Torrance. At some point along
the way I began developing these ideas into training sessions that
I shared at various churches. If you participated in those training
events, thank you for your interaction and the feedback.
I would also like to express my gratitude to my editors David
Zimmerman and Cindy Bunch for their patience and direction in
this process of getting this book out. To my friend Mike Friessen,
thank you for listening to me rant about ideas I could not articulate.
And to my wife, Shawna, once again I acknowledge that I am more
than honored to share the way of Jesus with you, particularly in the
ways that you have modeled so much of this book to me. The op-
portunity to share this journey with you remains the greatest of joys.
