Sebastian Coe to attend the Make UK National ABB COLUMN

Manufacturing Conference 2020 GROW WITH ROBOTS IN 2020

Developments in robotic technology are

on the rise to help tackle the
continuously evolving challenges found
in today’s UK manufacturing industry.
The opportunity for greater
productivity, quality and flexibility is
greater than ever before.
Industrial robots are no longer only large machines
suitable for repetitive processes in an automotive plant.
There are now smaller collaborative robots which work
alongside people to help alleviate dull tasks, as well as
software which allows larger robots to be reprogrammed
easily according to changes in production requirements.
SafeMove2, for example, provides greater flexibility
through restricting robot motion to precisely what is
needed for a specific application, so operators can trust
the robot to slow down and come to a stop when they
move into closer range. These developments open up
more career paths in roles which are set to be big in the
future such as robot programming and maintenance.
For those that know little about robots, starting with a
robotic cell or collaborative robot is a good option for
growth. Personalised confectionary manufacturer, Boomf,
has benefitted from 600 per cent growth by simply
installing a robotic cell for improved marshmallow cutting
into its North Bedfordshire-based manufacturing plant.
Even if you already have robots in your factory,
assessing the capabilities of those robots and re-
evaluating how the business performs can be the
difference between maintaining a steady flow of
production and exceeding performance. CHX, a plastic
promotions manufacturer originally invested in a robot
cell in 2005 to keep up with demand and become more
competitive in the industry. Picking, placing, printing and
cutting times were drastically reduced, meaning lead
times for customers were reduced by almost a whole
week. Years later, CHX decided to upgrade their system
with a more technologically advanced robot leading to
further improvements to production.
Whether currently a robot adopter or not, there’s
always a way to improve business through automation.
Getting to know what technologies are out there is the
best place to start and if you’re looking to add flexibility,
improve quality and boost productivity, why not grow
with robots?

Helping to combat a crisis

It’s an uncomfortable truth that while a third of the world’s food is wasted, one in nine
people do not have enough to eat. In a bid to redress this balance, a Spanish food
producer is turning Europe’s surplus fruit and vegetables into a nutritionally enriched,
natural foodstuff for people in need. Thanks to equipment and support from HRS Heat
Exchangers, Nutripeople can now produce 42 million pouches of its products each
year, helping those in developing countries to avoid hunger and malnutrition

Safety systems
for the packaging industry
The Schmersal Group develops and produces safety switching appliances and systems for the entire machinery and plant construction industry. In some industries
special requirements are applicable. As a customer focussed company who intensively deals with the wishes of the manufacturer and users of machines, Schmersal
has taken up these challenges from the start. As a result, specific products and solutions were developed for many industries.

For the sensitive fields of the packaging technology we have developed tailor made product series, which do not only guarantee the safety of the machine but also
contribute to an enhanced productivity and availability. This applies for instance to plants which were developed according to the Hygienic Design standards and to
machines, for which the directives regarding the dust explosion protection must be observed during the filling and packing of bulk goods.

Enhanced-sensitivity amplifier
for industrial metal detectors
E GE has developed a new compact, rugged MDVH
amplifier with enhanced sensitivity for its System 3000
industrial metal detector. The completely redesigned
amplifier is characterized by higher adjustable sensitivity
levels, reduced susceptibility to interference, and a more
robust housing with IP67 ingress protection. Featuring
automatic self-calibration, the unit works reliably even if
the detector coil comes near metal fittings. Users can
adjust the sensitivity of the detector coil as required via a
rotary potentiometer on the housing front. The amplifier
has a 260 x 160 x 90 mm wide aluminum housing. It is Innovative System Solutions for Process Automation

solutions for Zones 1 and 21 that feature sensor technology from factory automation and can be used in a huge range
of applications. From monitoring warehouses and rooms to use in areas focusing on personal and environmental
protection, huge developments are being made in the automation of explosion protection. Sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs
are housed in pressure-resistant enclosures, allowing processes to be further automated even under harsh conditions.
For example, the latest pilot project involves using the R2000 photoelectric scanner in Zone 1 to safely fill up tankers
with chemical substances.

Highly Flexible GRP Enclosure Series for Specific Application Requirements

The GR series of GRP enclosures caters perfectly to the needs of electrical installation in process plants. The products
in this series are designed to offer maximum flexibility for a wide range of applications. Many small details make it
easier to plan for specific customer demands. The sophisticated mounting grid makes the additional mounting base
obsolete, while also enabling terminals and switching elements to be planned and installed quickly and easily. It also
means that any DIN mounting rails can be mounted using self-tapping screws.
