a. Step 1: Define the aim of your research
In this step you have to identify the research aim that should express the intention or an
aspiration of the research study. What you hope to achieve should be summarized in a single
sentence at the end of a research project. Your aim should be specific and phrased in such a
way that it is possible to identify when it has been achieved. Start by writing a problem

statement and formulate research questions. Then the researcher need to collect quantitative
or qualitative data depending on your research questions.
- Quantitative data- numerical or statistical data
- Qualitative data – descriptive data in words or phrases.
Some of the methods covered here are quantitative, dealing with something that can be
counted. Others are qualitative, meaning that they consider factors other than numerical
values. In general, questionnaires, surveys, and documents and records are quantitative, while
interviews, focus groups, observations, and oral histories are qualitative. There can also be
crossover between the two methods.
b. Step 2: Choose your data collection method
Since most research involves the collection of data, there are several methods for data
collection:
- Data collection methods (Identify and discuss)

Experiment

An experiment is a controlled study in which the researcher attempts to understand cause-

and-effect relationships. The study is "controlled" in the sense that the researcher controls
how subjects are assigned to groups and which treatments each group receives.

In the analysis phase, the researcher compares group scores on some dependent variable.
Based on the analysis, the researcher draws a conclusion about whether the treatment
(independent variable) had a causal effect on the dependent variable.

Survey

Surveys collect information from a targeted group of people about their opinions, behavior,
or knowledge. Common types of example surveys are written questionnaires, face-to-face or
telephone interviews, focus groups, and electronic (e-mail or website) surveys.

Interview/focus group

Are interviews you conduct with individual or group of participants to collect a variety of
information.

Observation

Like experiments, observational studies attempt to understand cause-and-effect

relationships. However, unlike experiments, the researcher is not able to control how subjects
are assigned to groups and/or which treatments each group receives.

Ethnography

Ethnographies focus on describing the culture of a group in very detailed and complex manner.
The ethnography can be of the entire group or a subpart of it. It involves engaging in extensive
field work where data collection is mainly by interviews, symbols, artifacts, observations, and
many other sources of data.

Archival research

Archival research is research involving primary sources held in an archives, a special

Collections library, or other repository. Archival sources can be manuscripts, documents,

records (including electronic records), objects, sound and audiovisual materials, or other
materials.

Secondary data collection.

Secondary data means data collected by someone else earlier. These documents can be made
available by public libraries, websites, Government publications, books, journal articles,
internal records etc. data obtained from already filled in surveys, observations, experiments,
questionnaire, personal interview.

Step 3: Plan your data collection procedures

The researcher will make decisions about who will be surveyed, how data will be collected, the sources
of data that will be used, and the duration of the data collection project, among other questions. These
decisions may be made in consultation with an expert. The methods and approaches will flow from the
goals set.

Step 4: Collect the data

Once every question is clearly defined and the goals are properly set, information is collected. The
resources, and technology needed for the implementation of data collection, as well as the people
required in the data collection, are identified and determined.

Note: Additional 3 points will be given to students who replied within the 3 days after posting the
questions. Hence, students can earn a total of 10 points.

a. Why You Should Read a Data Gathering Procedure Example

We should read a data gathering procedure example because through it you can determine if you receive
a piece that is trustworthy or not. It is crucial to employ the best procedure to get the perfect results and
it also improves the quality of the paper and makes it sound scholarly. A data gathering procedure example
helps you to be well-versed with the procedure that can make your work easier and improve the general
quality of the papers you can prepare.

Reaction Paper on planning your data collection procedures

The reading is all about data gathering procedures applicable in our research study and samples of data
gathering procedure. The relevance of the reading to me as a student of PSU Graduate Studies and as a
member of the society is that as researchers it is important for us to plan for the data collection phase to
ensure that our research project has collected the highest quality data. Collecting data allows us to store
and analyze important information about our existing and potential samples or respondents. It costs less
and is faster if we plan the data collection ahead and it removes any potential bias or human error from
the data collected. It is through data collection that your research has the quality information they need
to make informed decisions from further analysis, study, and research. Without data collection, the
research itself would stumble around in the dark using outdated methods in making their decisions. What
I find compelling in the reading or the new things I have learned is that I learned about the step-by-step
guide to data collection that includes sequence of steps that a researcher should follow to effectively
collect a data. My learning affected preconception and misconceptions that I thought that as researchers
we can choose whatever data collection methods we want but that is not the case we have to carefully
select data collection methods and follow the correct flow of the data collection procedures for us to have
accurate and precise data gathered with the use of the best method and procedure. If the data collection
method is not suitable to the research it can be conflicting to its suitability to a research. You have to
consider several factors in before collecting data like your aim or purpose, respondents, resources, issues
of confidentiality and the type of information. There are various methods of collecting data. I also learned
that data collection methods may also include the use of existing data.

The following criteria will be used in rating your paper:

Data gathering procedures:
1. Identify issues and/or opportunities for collecting data.
2. Select issues and opportunities and set goals.
3. Plan approach and methods
4. Collect data
5. Analyze and interpret data
6. Act on results
2. Present samples of data gathering procedure; and
Examples:
1.Direct or Interview Method
The researcher has direct contact with the interviewee. The researcher gathers information by asking
questions to the interviewee.
2. The Indirect or Questionnaire Method
The researcher makes use of a written questionnaire. The researcher gives or distributes the questionnaire
to the respondents either by personal delivery or by mail.
3.Experimental
This method is utilized to find out cause and effect relationships.

Data Gathering Procedure

The first step before going to the testing proper is to make a request letter. Upon approval,
the researcher retrieves the request letter. The Principal, as well as class advisers and
other faculty members were selected in the administration. In administering the
questionnaire, the researcher was use the time allotted for vacant to avoid distractions of
class discussions. The student responses were given enough time to answer the
questions. After data gathering, the researcher now collected it for tallying the scores and
to apply the statistical treatment to be used with the study.

3.Submit gathering procedure.

Data gathering procedures

The teacher who handled the classes under experimentation discussed on how the
process starting from the pretest down to the posttest should be done. Two sets of tests
were administered to both groups; control and experimental groups. The pretest was
given before the experimentation began, and the posttest was administered after the
instruction was conducted. The study was conducted from January to March of school
year 2020-2021. After gathering the data, data were treated statistically, analyzed and
interpreted.
Following was the procedure of this study:
Republic of the Philippines

(i) Selection of the Students for Experimentation

In this study, There were 60 selected open high school at Bula National High School. All
the students form the sample of the study.
(ii) Assigning Methods of Teaching to the Groups
The two groups of students were assigned particular method of teaching. One group was
taught through Self-learning Modules and other was taught through Conventional Mode
of Teaching.
(iii) Experimentation
The experiment was conducted under three phases as
(a) Pre-test Phase
This was the first phase. Before exposing to the teaching learning material, both
experimental and control groups were pre-tested on each topic in science 9. After this, the
students of the experimental group were provided with directions about the use of Self-
learning Modules. Similarly, rapport was established with the control group students for
smooth functioning of the work to be carried out.
(b) Post-test Phase
The second phase of the experiment was concerned with the handling of the experiment.
During this phase, the experimental group was exposed to Self-learning Modules and the
control group was taught through the Conventional Mode of Teaching. The experiment
was conducted in the July to August.
At the end of each topic, both the experimental and control groups were given criterion
referenced test to evaluate their achievement level. The scores achieved on criterion
referenced tests were termed as post-test scores. Then the scores of criterion referenced
tests were compared in order to assess the effectiveness of two methods of teaching.
(c) Retention-test Phase
The third phase was the retention test phase where the retention level of students of both
the groups were measured. After a period of seven days, retention test was administered
after finishing each topic. Scores obtained by both the groups were termed as retention
test scores. These scores were compared to know the retention level of students of both
the experimental group and control group.

Note: Additional 3 points will be given to students who replied within the 3 days after posting the
questions. Hence, students can earn a total of 15 points.
