Simple teaching method.

English texts in small words can cause great problems for readers. Many beginners who do not use
essays in their own language may have difficulty learning when to use them or I. Readers of the
higher lever can also struggle with multiple releases and quirks for article use. Before entering the
first or intermediate lesson (see “Practice” below), try to introduce the Basic English essays a, an,
and the type of chart to help students compare and understand the differences.

Tips:
1. Use / an / ø with common nouns. What is a common (infinite) name? For example:

I'm hungry. I want a sandwich. Do you see the sandwich right now? No? That's why it's a
sandwich. I don't have a specific sandwich in mind. I can't see you, and you can't see it. We
don’t know which sandwich I’m talking about. It can be any sandwich.

2. Use certain nouns. What is a specific (correct) noun? For example:

[Teacher hands student blue pen] Kim, can you pass me a blue pen? Can everyone see the
blue pen? Yes? That's why it's a blue pen. I know what a pen is. I see it, and you see it. I'm
only talking about this one pen, and we all know which pen I'm talking about.
3. Use the word before the words that start with the vowel (a, e, i, o, u) and before the words
that start with the consonant.

Note: Words beginning with “u” or “h” take u if the noun starts with a vowel (eg umbrella,
heir) and if the noun starts with a consonant sound (eg house).

4. Use when there is only one item. Examples include sun, moon, land / library, bank, laundry
(in town) / door, white board, teacher desk (in your classroom).

5. Use when the second word is mentioned. Even before we see it, we know which speaker we
are talking about because it has been introduced. For example:

I saw the movie last night. The movie was so boring that I fell asleep.

6. Use when a noun has an adjective phrase or a phrase that changes it. Additional details that
explain the noun make it clear what noun we are talking about. For example:

The dog that follows me home every day is really friendly. Get used to it.
