Company History:

One of America's most admired companies, Johnson & Johnson (J & J) is one of the largest
healthcare firms in the world and one of the most diversified. Its operations are organized into
three business segments: pharmaceutical, which generates 39 percent of revenues and 61
percent of operating income

Early History: From Surgical Dressings to Baby Cream

J & J traces its beginnings to the late 1800s, when Joseph Lister's discovery that airborne
germs were a source of infection in operating rooms sparked the imagination of Robert Wood
Johnson, a New England druggist. Johnson joined forces with his brothers, James Wood
Johnson and Edward Mead Johnson, and the three began producing dressings in 1886 in New
Brunswick, New Jersey, with 14 employees in a former wallpaper factory.

Johnson & Johnson was founded more than 120 years ago. Since then, we’ve brought the world new ideas and
products that have transformed human health and well-being.

Johnson & Johnson spread its roots to the world’s largest democracy, India, during the endemic post-independence turmoil of 1947. It was Mr. Patrick Whaley who set
about with confidence and determination during this period of turbulence to begin the wok of establishing Johnson & Johnson in the subcontinent. Things progressed
quickly and by 1948, Johnson’s Baby Powder was being manufactured by British Drug House in Prabhadevi, Bombay, and marketed by the company.

Other consumer products like TEK toothbrushes, Johnson’s Baby Cream and Prickly Heat Powder followed suit. However, highly specialized products like Belladonna
plasters, pharmaceuticals and Permacel Tapes were imported from the parent company. It was only ten years later that the company began to manufacture its own
products.

In September 1957, a new company, Johnson & Johnson India Ltd. was created and registered with twelve employees on its rolls.

In the 50 years since its establishment as a modest 12-employee outfit, Johnson & Johnson Ltd. has gained a reputation for delivering high-quality products at competitive
prices. Our success, we believe, stems from our staunch commitment to caring for and catering to the needs of our customers and employees.

The Johnson brothers were very resourceful when it came to packaging the Company’s early
products.  In our early days, Johnson & Johnson bought cigar boxes from the local cigar box
manufacturer in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to use as packaging for some of our medicated
plasters.

BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages are one of the most recognizable of the Company’s products. They were invented in 1920 by an employee named Earle Dickson,
who worked as a cotton buyer. His wife Josephine was prone to kitchen accidents. Earle wanted a bandage his wife could apply herself, so he took two of the Company’s
early products – adhesive tape and gauze – and combined them by laying out a long piece of surgical tape and placing small pieces of gauze on it in intervals. To keep
the adhesive from sticking, he covered it with crinoline fabric. Whenever his wife cut herself, she cut a piece of the tape and gauze pad and used it as a bandage. Dickson
mentioned his invention at work, and a new product was born. The first BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages went on the market in 1921, and were the first ready-
made adhesive bandages that consumers could apply themselves. Earle Dickson was made a vice president at Johnson & Johnson.
