SURVEY REVEALS UNSAFE

GATES STILL PREVAIL
Automated Gate survey shows significant risk of further accidents in 2011
A survey of automated gates in the UK
has revealed that despite the tragic
deaths of two children last year in
separate automated gate accidents, there
is a substantial risk of history repeating
itself given the number of ‘unsafe’ gates
which remain in service.

The survey was conducted by Gate Safe,

spearheaded by Jacksons Fencing and
supported by RoSPA and the Institution
of Occupational Safety and Health. It
shows that a massive 88% of the gates
surveyed failed to comply with current
HSE guidelines in relation to the inclusion
of recommended features and procedures
designed to reduce the risk of injury.
Combine this fact with the worrying
statistic that 51% of respondents advised
that the general public and children are
likely to use or play by their gate and the
chance of another accident occurring
becomes an alarming possibility.

The survey also showed that: in place to ensure the on-going safety serviced, meaning that even if gate manufacturer, constructor / contractor

The main guiding principle of ArcelorMittal Sheffields’s

The way that their fencing is

quicker and more easily than other

By correctly tensioning the wire as

it goes into the machine the fencing

is put into the horizontal wires will
also help with speedy erection. It
will also allow for climatic elasticity;
the fence should be as straight on

The 2Life Zinc/Aluminium coating used

Victoria Poolman meets Dean Larkcom of Fox Fencing to hear about his enterprise
Having been in the trade since 1990,

THE BRYCE HD180

A POST DRIVER WITH A DIFFERENCE
You will already be familiar with the
Bryce Suma brand and the chances
are you have heard of Kattrak
International Ltd, but have you
heard of the Bryce HD180?

Over the years people have made

conversions on small tracked
machines to suit their own needs
and applications. The HD180 is now
a commercially available machine and
is a unique combination of features
that allow a post to be driven with
precision quickly and easily without
having to move the tracked machine
itself for post alignment. This is an
important point when working on
wet greasy sloping ground as moving
the complete machine can upset the
alignment between post and mast.

The Bryce HD180 is a lightweight

tracked machine that combines the
strength and stature of a Suma Post
Driver with the agility of tracked
dumpers supplied by Kattrak. It is Jock Strikes a deal with Peter and Gareth

KATTRAK are Based in North Ayrshire, South West Scotland, We specialise in hire and sales of tracked dumpers, from 0.5 ton to 12 ton
capacity, but also have a range of Excavators from 1t Micro to 14t, available on self drive or with operators.

We also adapt some of our dumpers to carry different attachments, with a particular emphasis on fence post chappers. The latest addition to the
fleet is a Bryce HD180, which has been fitted to our 3t Canycom swivel skip machine, shown above. Such has been the interest in this unit that we
have already sold one to Duncan Fisher Contracting from Perthshire. Mr Fisher said “ The thing that really impressed me about this unit was the fact
it can swivel 180 degrees, making it much more flexible than other units which have fixed post chappers”. This marks an exiting time for the Ayrshire
firm who have begun fitting various sizes of post chapper to their Tracked carriers to satisfy the increasing demand from Fencing contractors who
see the advantages tracked machines have over Tractors.

Kattrak are also Scottish dealers for Yanmar equipment , which covers a range of equipment, including, Compactors, Rollers, Excavators and

Bryce HD180 was born the virtues
of a small tracked machine are well-
documented in that they are compact
and lightweight but as Jock says “you
can’t hang a big performance post
driver on the back of them”. As a
fencing contractor, he has always
been very focussed on speed and
efficiency and has found a way round
this problem by developing a machine
that has all the performance, features
and hitting power of the well-known
Bryce Suma in a small lightweight
tracked outfit.

The Bryce HD180 is a bespoke piece

of machinery exclusive to both Bryce
Suma and Kattrak International – the
agreement is that Kattrak supplies
the tracked dumper and Bryce does
the conversion work. The machine’s
name is derived from the fact that
the tracked dumper is able to swivel
through 180º without any fuss and
as such, gives the added versatility of
being able to drive posts from either
side or anywhere in between. The
patent for the Bryce HD180 design
is currently pending and it looks set
to make a substantial impact on the
market in the coming months.
