Test 1 BengTech ELTELA1 - 2017
MODULE : Electrotechnology 1A
CODE : ELTELA 1
DURATION : 90 minutes
TOTAL MARKS : 70
FULL MARKS : 70
1.1.1 Derive the mathematical equation that could be used to evaluate the net repulsive
force on a unit positive charge 𝑄3 located at 𝑥 metres from 𝑄2 . (4)
1.1.2 Suppose that the unit charge 𝑄3 is moved as a result of the net force from its initial
position a to point b situated 𝑑𝑥 metres apart from each other. Formulate the
corresponding relation that could be used to estimate the energy required to
move this charge. (3)
1.1.3 Assuming an energy value of 0. 54 J is required to move an electrostatic charge of
𝑄 = 1.6 × 10−6 𝐶 between two points. Calculate the potential difference between
the two points. (3)
1.2 An energy source forces a constant current of 3A for one minute to flow through a
lightbulb. If 4.5kJ is given off in the form of light and heat energy. Calculate the
voltage drop across the bulb. (3)

1.3 A piece of wire of length 8 𝑚 and cross-sectional area 3 𝑚𝑚 has a resistance of
0.16 Ω. If the wire is drawn out until its cross-sectional area is 1 𝑚𝑚2 , calculate the
new resistance of the wire. (5)
1.4 Some copper wire has a resistance of 200 Ω at 20℃. A current is passed through the
wire and the temperature rises to 90℃. Determine the resistance of the wire at
90℃, assuming that the temperature coefficient of resistance is 0.004/℃ at 0℃. (5)
2.1 For the electrical circuit given in figure 1. The magnitudes of the passive components
are as follows: R1 = 4k7 Ω, R2 = 330 Ω, R3 = 8k2 Ω, R4 = 150 Ω, R5 = 560 Ω, R6 =
10 Ω, R7 = 10kΩ, R8 = 1k8 Ω.

2.1.1 Calculate the magnitude of total current through the circuit. (8)
2.1.2 Use current divider rule to determine the magnitude of the current through resistor
R3, R5, R6 and R7. (6)
2.1.3 Calculate the voltage drops across each of the resistors (Tabulate your results) and
hence verify Kirchoff’s voltage law. (7)
2.2 Four capacitors are connected to a DC voltage source in accordance to the
configuration indicated in figure 2 below.
2.2.1 Determine the equivalent capacitance such as experienced in the circuit. (3)
2.2.2 Calculate the total energy stored in the capacitive circuit. (3)
2.2.3 Calculate the voltages across each of the capacitors. (5)
