SYLLABUS
CRIMINAL LAW REVIEW

Course : LLB 421


Credit : Four (4) units
Professor : Rodulph Joseph Val J. Carrillo

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a branch of law that defines felonies, treats of their nature and
provides for their punishment.

Criminal Law 1 deals in fundamental principles of Criminal Law. The major


topics are: how criminal liability is incurred; how criminal liability is
modified; who are criminally liable; duration, effect and application of
penalties; and civil liability arising from felonies.

Criminal Law 2 deals in the individual felonies as well as the offenses of


various Special Penal Laws. The major topics are: the categories of
felonies in the Revised Penal Code; the offenses in various Special Penal
Laws; the elements of the each crime; who are liable.

COURSE LEVEL LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of the course CRIMINAL LAW REVIEW, the student


should be able to:

CLLO 1: Understand the basic and fundamental principles that govern


criminal law.

CLLO 2: Identify the different principles of law governing the following


topics: how criminal liability is incurred; how criminal liability is modified;
who are criminally liable; duration, effect and application of penalties; and
civil liability arising from felonies.

CLLO 3: Relate the principles in criminal law to the assigned cases so as to


better understand their application in actual cases.

CLLO 4: Internalize the rationale behind criminal law, and thus be an


effective and ethical advocate either for the prosecution or defense.
CLLO 5: Understand the different felonies in the Revised Penal Code and
the offenses in various Special Penal Laws.

CLLO 6: Identify the elements of the each felony in the Revised Penal
Code and offenses in the Special Penal Laws.

CLLO 7: Relate the principles in criminal law to the assigned cases so as to


better understand their application in actual cases.

CLLO 8: Internalize the rationale behind criminal law, and thus be an


effective and ethical advocate either for the prosecution or defense.

LEARNING APPROACHES, STRATEGIES & TECHNIQUES

This course will be conducted by employing a combination of online


synchronous and asynchronous material. The student will be required to
read text books and cases relevant to the subject matter.

Oral recitations will be conducted with the end of testing the student’s
ability to comprehend the reading assignments as well as his oral
communicative skills. The student will be required to orally recite on
matters taken up the previous session as well as assigned topics and cases
to be taken up for the present session. There will be at least two major
summative examinations in this course.

The major summative examinations will be essay type exams. Formative


assessments shall be given after taking up a major topic. Formative
assessments shall be ungraded exercises. The purpose of this formative
assessments is to help students conduct a self-assessment of his/her
progress in the course.

EVALUATIVE MEASURES:

To following criteria will be used to grade the student:


Written examinations with a passing score of 70% for each
examination.
The final grade is computed in the following manner:

Pre-Midterm – 22.5%
Midterm – 22.5%
Pre-Final – 22.5%
Final – 22.5%
CLEP – 10%

POLICIES

The material made available to the student through the official Learning
Management System shall be for the exclusive use of the student. Under
no circumstance shall these material be distributed or made available to
any other individual unless with the permission or consent of the School.

Students shall take examinations as scheduled. No special (advance/late)


examinations shall be given.
