PE 9 Learning Resource 1.2: THE WALTZ

HISTORY OF THE WALTZ

“The sounds of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's “Waltz of the Flowers” have become a holiday
standard, but this family favorite began as a dance of rebellion, embraced by teens
and sneered at by parents. When the dance first whirled through the ballrooms of
Vienna, it caused an outrage and marked a decisive shift in European social
customs.”
“The dance’s origins are probably humble. Its name comes from walzen— “to turn” in
German—and may have developed out of the folk music of Austria’s western Tyrol
region, by the late 1700s the waltz spread throughout Europe. The dance craze was
particularly popular among young people from the wealthy middle classes, the
perfect expression of a new, confident bourgeoisie, who were discarding the
aristocratic customs of their elders.

WALTZ CHARACTERISTICS
The Waltz is a smooth dance that travels around the line of dance.
Characterized by its “rise and fall” action, the Waltz includes a step, slide, and step
3/4 time. Dancers should move their shoulders smoothly, parallel with the floor
instead of up and down. Dancer must strive to lengthen each step. On the first beat
of the music, a step is taken forward on the hell, then onto the ball of the foot with a
gradual rise to the toes, continuing to the second and third beats of the music. At the
end of the third beat, the heel is lowered to the floor to the starting position.

BASIC STEPS OF WALTZ

For you to achieve a graceful movement in doing the Waltz, you must
first practice the basic hold. The couple dance position in Waltz is called the
Close Hold. Follow the instructions below:

7
PE 9 – Course Guide

Closed Position. The Waltz is danced in

Closed Position. The boy should place
his right hand slightly beneath the girl’s
left shoulder blade with his right arm
held at a 90-degree angle to his body.
His left arm should be raised so that the
girl’s hand can rest lightly on it and
should be held at her eye level. The girl,
in turn, should rest her left hand
comfortably on the boy’s right shoulder, providing pressure with her fingers

and thumb to better “follow” her partner’s lead. For better balance, the girl

should look over the boy’s right shoulder. This also create an elegant and
poised dance position.
After learning the basic hold, practice and execute the basic step
pattern of Waltz. Follow the instructions below and take note that the
instructions herewith are for the boy; the girl does the opposite.
a. Step left foot forward, heel first then flat …………………………………… count 1
b. Step right sideward, toe ………………………………………………………count 2
c. Step left foot close to right foot toe then lower ……………………………. count 3
to heel flat at the end of count 3
Try to master this basic step pattern.
