DAY 2

Topic: Basic Set Operations

• Describes universal set;

• Illustrates union, intersection, difference of sets, and
SPECIFIC
complement of a set;
OBJECTIVES
• Uses Venn diagram to represent sets, subsets, and set
operations; and
• Solves problems involving sets.
• Union
KEY TERMS/ • Intersection
CONCEPTS • Difference of sets
• Complement of a set
DAY 2
Intersection of Sets.
The intersection of sets A and B is the set whose elements
are common to set A and set B. In symbols, the
intersection of sets A and B is A Ո B.
, the shaded area corresponds to A Ո B.

ACTIVITY 1

Example 1. Let A = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }, B = { 1, 3, 5, 7 } and C = { 3, 6, 9 }

Find the following:
a. A Ո B
b. B Ո C
c. A Ո A
d. B Ո U
e. ( A Ո B) Ո C
Example 1. Let A = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }, B = { 1, 3, 5, 7 }
and C = { 3, 6, 9 }
Find the following:

a. A Ո B = { 2, 4, 6, 8 } ∩ { 1, 3, 5, 7 }
={ }
Example 1. Let A = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }, B = { 1, 3, 5, 7 }
and C = { 3, 6, 9 }
Find the following:

b. B Ո C = {1, 3, 5, 7 } ∩ { 3, 6, 9 }
={3}
Example 1. Let A = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }, B = { 1, 3, 5, 7 }
and C = { 3, 6, 9 }
Find the following:

c. A Ո A = { 2, 4, 6, 8 } ∩ { 2, 4, 6, 8 }
= { 2, 4, 6, 8 }
=A
Example 1. Let A = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }, B = { 1, 3, 5, 7 }
and C = { 3, 6, 9 }
Find the following:

d. B Ո U =
Since every set is a subset of the universal set,
then every element of B is in U. B ∩ U = B.
Example 1. Let A = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }, B = { 1, 3, 5, 7 }
and C = { 3, 6, 9 }
Find the following:

e. ( A Ո B) Ո C
= {{ 2, 4, 6, 8 } ∩ { 1, 3, 5, 7 }} ∩ { 3, 6, 9 }
= { } ∩ { 3, 6, 9 }
={ }
Difference of Sets:
The difference of sets A and B is the set whose elements belong to
set A but which do not belong to set B. In symbols, the difference of
sets A and B is A – B , which is read as “A minus B”.

In the Venn diagram below, the shaded area corresponds

to A – B.

b. B – C
c. ( A U B ) – C
d. A – ( B Ո C )
Example2. Let A = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }, B = { 1,3, 5, 7 } and
C = { 3, 6, 9 }. Find the following.

a. A – B =
= { 2, 4, 6, 8 } – { 1, 3, 5, 7 }
= { 2, 4, 6, 8 }
Example2. Let A = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }, B = { 1,3, 5, 7 } and
C = { 3, 6, 9 }. Find the following.

b. B – C =
= { 1, 3, 5, 7 } – { 3, 6, 9 }
= { 1, 5, 7 }
Example2. Let A = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }, B = { 1, 3, 5, 7 } and
C = { 3, 6, 9 }. Find the following.

c. ( A U B ) – C
= {{ 2, 4, 6, 8 } ∪ { 1, 3, 5, 7 }} – { 3, 6, 9 }
= { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 } – { 3, 6, 9 }
= { 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 }
Example2. Let A = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }, B = { 1, 3, 5, 7 } and
C = { 3, 6, 9 }. Find the following.

d. A – ( B Ո C )
