Visual Inspection

Personnel are required to demonstrate annually completion of a J-1 Jaeger type eye vision test.

Direct visual examination requires access to permit the eye to be within 6 inch to 24 inch of the surface, at
an angle not less than 30 degrees

Optical aid – 100 foot candles (1000 lux)

One of the most popular indicators is the pie gauge. It consists of eight low carbon steel segments, brazed
together to form an octagonal plate that is copper plated on one side to hide the joint

ACFM

 ACFM is used for the evaluation and monitoring of existing cracks

 It requires minimal surface preparation and can be used at elevated temperatures up to 900 F. With
its increased sensitivity to shallow cracks

Iridium 192 – 0.25 inch to 3.0 inch

Cobalt 60 – 1.5 to 7.0 inch

CE

 CE less than 0.35 require no pre heat

 CE of 0.35 to 0.55 require pre heat
 CE greater than 0.55 - both preheat & PWHT
