I. INTRODUCTION

Caltex Pacific Indonesia ( CPI ) is in the process of implementing a Slurry Fracture Injection
Project ( SFI ) for the disposal of oilfield waste generated from the production process at the
Duri field.

The SFI process is a deep well injection process for the disposal of produced solids and oily
viscous fluid waste streams. High injection pressure in excess on the formation fracture
extension pressure is used to achieve insitu injectivity during SFI operations. Various process
control techniques are used to ensure formation containment of the injected slurry, to
maintain formation injectivity and to maximize formation storage capacity during long term
continuous SFI operating conditions.

II. DESIGN BASIS

Make Up Water Pumps will be installed at Waste Brine Surge Tank. Based on Design Basis
and Material Balance report ( please refer to document no. CPI–600–SFI–GN–PR–101–A ),
Make Up Water Pumps should be designed based on the these following considerations.

Table 1. Design Basis

DESCRIPTION REMARKS
Maximum Flow Capacity ( Final Phase ) 36,000 BWPD
Normal Flow Capacity ( Initial Phase ) 26,000 BWPD
Minimum Flow Capacity 18,000 BWPD
Fluid Name Waste Water
Design Temperature 175 oF
Design Specific Gravity 1.0
Design Viscosity 1 CP
Approximately Destination Pressure 8 psig
Approximately Distance Length 18,000 ft
Approximately Elevation Difference 18 ft
No of Operating Pumps at Final Phase 4 units
No of Spare Pumps 3 units
Operating Time 20 hours / day

III. DESIGN CRITERIA

1. Design Pressure and Temperature

Design pressure and temperature shall be in accordance with Table 3. Material
Balance, Design Basis and Material Balance report ( please refer to document no. CPI–
600–SFI–GN–PR–101–A ).

2. Sparing Philosophy
For continuous operation, pumps shall have spare at least 50 %.

3. Line Sizing Criteria

Line sizing criteria shall be in accordance with API RP 14E "Offshore Production
Platform Piping System".
a. Liquid line ( Refer to API RP 14E section 2.3 )
Minimum Velocity = 3 fps ( to minimize deposition of solid )
Maximum Velocity = 15 fps ( to minimize flashing ahead of control valve )

b. Piping system at pump suction ( API RP 14E section 2.3 )

Velocity = 2 – 3 fps ( for centrifugal pumps )
Maximum pressure drop should be designed so the NPSH available exceeds the
NPSH required

c. Pump Discharge
Velocity = 6 – 9 fps ( for centrifugal pumps )

d. Pipeline
The velocity should not above of the erosion velocity ( Ve )
Maximum pressure drop should meet the delivery pressure at Water Surge Tank
at SFI Area – 6 , minimum 8 psig.

4. Pump Criteria
Pump criteria shall be in accordance with API Standard 610 "Centrifugal Pumps for
General Refinery Services". Design fluid temperature for pump is 175 oF.

5. Operation Time
Pumps shall be design based on 20 hours operating / day

IV. PROCESS DESCRIPTION

All water from various sources will comes to Waste Brine Surge Tanks ( 8057.T.1211 A,B ).
These 2 ( two ) tanks with 1,000 bbl each capacity are already existing at CGS–5 area.
These tanks function as buffer tank or surge tank for mixed water before it pumped to SFI
Area–6.

Make–Up Water Pumps ( 8057.P.1001 A,B,C,D,E,F,G ) will be installed at Waste Brine Surge
Tank. These pumps will be run based on flow demand basis and run time basis, since there
is a wide range of demand water flow, approximately 18,000 – 26,000 BWPD for initial
phase and up to 36,000 BWPD for final phase. Number of working pumps should be depend
on flow demand which present during operation.

To prevent the make–up water pump start / stop frequently and fulfilled standard operation
procedure, pumps will be designed with one pump – minimum water flow setting by
circulate the water back to Waste Brine Surge Tank. This settings will start if the water
demand to SFI area is low ( indicate by low water flow ).
