STATICAL YEAR BOOK 2017 TELANGANA

POPULATION
1. After accounting for the transferred 327 villages from the erstwhile Khammam
district to Andhra Pradesh) and is the twelfth largest State in terms of both area
and the size of the population in the country.

2. The State is bordered by the States of Maharashtra to the North and North-West
and Chhattisgarh to the North, Karnataka to the West, and Andhra Pradesh to the
South, East and North-East.

3. The annual normal rainfall of the State is around 905.3 mm. Important soils
include red sandy loams, red loams with clay base along with very small patches
of alluvial soils.

4. The maximum and minimum temperatures during south west monsoon ranges
between 13°C - 27°C and 29°C -34°C, respectively.

5. In order to bring administration closer to the public and to ensure the benefits of
development and welfare schemes reach the poorest person in the State more
effectively and efficiently, the existing 10 districts are re-organized into 31
districts

6. The geographical area of the Telangana State is 1,12,077 sq. kms., with a
population of 350.04 lakhs consisting of 176.12 lakh males and 173.92 lakh
females.

7. 21 Districts out of 31 districts have the Sex Ratio more than the State average of
988 and 11 districts have the Sex Ratio with more than 1000 female per 1000
male which is
praiseworthy.

8. Highest Sex Ratio is in Nirmal district with 1,046 Female per 1000 Males. The sex
ratio has shown an increasing trend in the State from 967 in 1991 to 971 in 2001
and further to 988 in 2011.

11. A person whose age is 7 years and above and is able to read and write wit
understanding in any one language is defined as literate.
12. The literacy rate of the State as per 2011 census is 66.54%. Male literacy stands at
75.04% and female literacy at 57.99%.

13. Literacy in Hyderabad district is highest with 83.25% followed by Medchal-

Malkajgiri, Warangal Urban, Rangareddy and Karimnagar

14. Jogulamba Gadwal district is lowest with 49.87% followed by Nagarkurnool with
54.38%, Wanaparthy with 55.67% and Medak at 56.12%.

15. Except Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Warangal Urban, Rangareddy and

Karimnagar all other Districts Literacy rate are lower than State average of
66.54%.

16. Out of the total population of the State, scheduled castes constitute 15.45% and
the scheduled tribes constitute 9.08%.

17. There has been a significant increase in scheduled tribes population from 2.81%
in 1961 to 8.19% in 1981 and further to 9.08% in 2011.

18. Urban population, according to 2011 census, is 136.09 lakhs, whereas it was 98.53
lakhs in 2001, which increased by 36% over the decade in the State.

19. This has made Medchal- Malkajgiri as the next highly urbanized district with
70.22% urban population, then Rangareddy with 57.70%

20. Urban Population stood at third position, around 30% of the total urban
population in Telangana state resides in the capital city of Hyderabad alone.

21. Workforce: Persons engaged in any economically gainful activity are considered
as workers or workforce. According to population Census 2011, total workforce of
the State is 163.42 lakhs.

22. Total Workers Include all main workers and marginal workers which constitute
163.42 lakhs in the State.

23. Total number of cultivators are 31.51 lakhs as per 2011 Census.

24. Main Workers: Main Workers are persons engaged in any economically gainful
activity for 183 days or more in a year. There are 137.20 lakh main workers, of
which 22.42 lakhs belong to scheduled castes and 14.58 lakhs belongs to
scheduled tribes, as per 2011 Census.

25. Marginal workers: Marginal workers are persons engaged in any economically
gainful activity for less than 183 days. As per 2011 Census there are 26.22 lakh
 marginal workers, of which 4.96 lakhs belong to scheduled castes and 2.93 Lakhs
belongs to scheduled tribes

26. Agricultural labourer: Agricultural labourer is person working in another

persons land for wages in cash or kind. He has no risk of cultivation. Total
number of agricultural labourers as per Census 2011 in the State are 59.15 lakhs

27. Non worker: Non worker is a person who is no engaged in any gainful activity.
There are 186.62 lakh non workers as per 2011 Census

HEALTH AND FAMILY

28. In six out of ten erstwhile districts of the State, the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is
found to be much higher than the State average of 39 and national average of
40. But in the Year 2015-16 the Infant Mortality Rate has come down to 34 as
compared to 39 during the year 2013.

29. The Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) of the State is 92, which is much lesser than
the national average of 167. Among all the erstwhile districts, the Maternal
Mortality Rate (MMR) of Adilabad district is comparatively very high at 152,
followed by Khammam and Mahabubnagar districts.

CILMATE

32. The average or normal rainfall of the State is about 905.3 mm and about 80% of
annual rainfall is received from the south-west monsoons alone during (June to
September.

33. During the period from 2004-05 to 2015-16, the annual actual rainfall received
was lowest in 2004-05 with 614 mm., where as it was the highest in 2013-14 with
1,212.2 mm., as against normal rainfall of 906.6 mm., in the State.

AGRUCULTURE:

34. The share of agriculture sector to the Gross State Value Added (GSVA) in 2015-16
is 14.7 percent and 2016-17 is 15.3 percent at current prices.

35. The total geographical area of the State is 112.08 lakh hectares, of which the area
under forest cover is 25.40 lakh hectares, constitute 22.66% of the land. About
37.25% area is under cultivation (41.75 lakh hectares), 14.08% is current fallow
lands (15.78 lakh hectares), 7.96% of land is put to non-agricultural uses (8.92
lakh hectares), 5.42% is barren and uncultivable (6.07 lakh hects.)

36. Paddy is the major food crop and staple food of the State

37. During 2015-16, production of total food grains was recorded as 51.45 lakh
tonnes in the State.
38. As per the Agricultural Census, 2010-11, the number of land holdings in the State
is accounted to 55.54 lakhs and the area held by these holdings is 61.97 lakh
hectares.

39. The average size of the holding in the State is 1.12 hectares, which is highly
uneconomical to operate.

40. In the State, 62.0 percent of the holdings are marginal (less than 1 hectare) and
the percentage of small holdings (1 to 2 hectares) is 23.9%. Thus, marginal and
small holdings constitute about 85.9% of total agricultural holdings in the State,

41. It can be observed that, the area sown is higher with 34.44 lakhs hectares in
2010- 11 with a production of 92.60 lakhs tonnes, whereas the area sown was
lowest in 2015-16 with 21.80 lakh hectares with a production of 51.45 lakh
tonnes, in the State.

42. The cropping intensity (the ratio of gross cropped area to net cropped area) is
one of the indicators for assessing efficiency of agriculture sector. In other words
cropping intensity refers to raising of a number of crops from the same field
during one Agricultural year

43. The cropping intensity for the year 2015-16 decreased to 1.17 from 1.21 in 2014-
15, showing a decrease of 3.31 percent over previous year.

44. The cropping intensity is highest in Nizamabad district with 1.36 and lower in
Mahabubnagar district with 1.08.

45. There are 6.30 lakh dug wells, 6.53 lakh tube wells,0.50 lakh surface flow and lift
irrigation sources totaling to 13.33 lakh sources are catering

46. The gross area irrigated in the State during 2015-16 has decreased to 20.28 lakh
hectares from 25.29 lakh hectares in 2014-15, showing a decrease of 19.81%.

47. The net are irrigated has also decreased to 14.86 lakh hectares in 2015-16 from
17.26 lakh hectares in 2014-15 showing a decrease of 13.90%.

48. The irrigation intensity is the ratio of gross area irrigated to the net area irrigated.
In other words, it represents the number of times the area is irrigated in a year, in
both the seasons.

49. The irrigation intensity during the year 2015-16 was 1.36 whereas it was 1.47 in
2014-15

50. The irrigation intensity is highest in Nizamabad district (1.57) and lowest in
Mahabubnagar district (1.14).

FOREST

52. India’s National forest policy 1988 aims at maintaining 33 percent country's
geographical area under forest and tree cover

53. The contribution of Forestry and logging sector to State Gross Value Added
(GVA) at current prices is 0.41% and 2.75% in the GVA of Agriculture and allied
sector for the year 2015-16

54. State is having a forest area of 27,292 sq. kms., which accounts for 24.35% of
total geographical area, including social forestry. Out of the total Forest Area,
Reserved Forest area is 19,629.54 sq. kms., Protected Forest forms 6,988.95 sq.
kms., and the rest of the area is unclassified.

55. The total revenue realized during 2015-16 is Rs. 10,820.79 lakhs on sale of forest
produce in the State.

56. Wild Life Sanctuaries in the state include Eturunagaram Wild Life Sanctuary
in Jayashankar district, Pakhal Wild Life Sanctuary in Mahabubabad district,
Kawal Wild Life Sanctuary (Tiger Reserve) is spread over in Mancherial and
Nirmal districts, Pranahita and Siwaram Wild Life Sanctuaries in Mancherial
district, Kinnerasani Wild Life Sanctuary in Bhadradri Kothagudem district,
Manjira Wild Life Sanctuary in Sangareddy district, Amarabad Tiger Reserve
is spread over in Nalgonda and Nagarkurnool districts, and Pocharam Wild
Life Sanctuary in Medak district.

58. There are three National Parks in the state viz., Kasu Brahmananda Reddy
National Park in Hyderabad district, Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park and
Mrugavani National Park in Rangareddy district.

INDUSTRIES

60. The Industry Sector is contributing around 20% to the Gross State Domestic
Product with a direction of positive growth in the State.

61. Construction, during the period between 2012-13 and 2016-17 is averaged at
5.24% as against GSDP growth of 12.72% in the State

MINING

64. Telangana region has rich natural resources. About 20 percent of the country’s
coal deposits are found here.
 ENERGY

65. The State has a installed capacity of 6,245.26 MW, including all sources such as
Hydel and Solar.

TRANSPORTATION

66. Total Network constitute 98,210.19 Kms., of road length.

67. As on 31.03.2016 the Indian railways are rendering its services by establishing
232 railway

68. The State has registered more than 78.38 lakh vehicles up to the year 2014-15, of
which about 8.74 lakh are transport vehicles and rest about 69.64 lakh are non-
transport vehicles. During

PUBLIC FINANCE

69. Pragathi Paddu Outlay of the Budget Estimates for the year 2017-18. According
to the Budget Estimates for the year 2017-18, total provision under P r a g a t h i
P a d d u Ou t l a y i s Rs.88,03,879.77 lakhs, of which Rs.49,14,296.02 lakhs
(55.82%) is provided for Economic Services, Rs. 36,85,378.86 lakhs for Social
Services (41.86%) and rest of Rs. 2,04,204.89 lakhs (2.32%) for General Services

STATE ECONOMY

70. The Government of Telangana has revised its GSDP estimates by adopting the
new base year 2011-12, on par with the Central Statistics Office, Ministry of
Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI).

71. The reason for changing the base year periodically is to take into account the
structural changes that have been taking place in the economy over the years,
adoption of latest methodologies, new data sets and latest census and survey
results and to depict a true picture of the economy through macro aggregates
like Gross State Domestic Product
(GSDP), Capital Formation etc.

72. The Government of Telangana has released the GSDP estimates for the year
2016-17 (Advance Estimates). According to this, the anticipated GSDP at constant
(2011-12) prices for the year 2016-17 (AE) is Rs. 5,11,286 crore as against Rs.
4,64,389 crore for 2015-16 (FRE), registering growth of 10.1 percent.
73. The GSDP at current prices for the year 2016- 17 (AE) is anticipated at Rs.
6,54,294 crore as against Rs. 5,75,631 crore for 2015-16 (FRE), exhibiting a growth
rate of 13.7 percent

74. The growth rate of GSDP denotes the performance of economy of the State and
changes in the magnitude and composition of the State economy, over time

75. The Primary Sector consists sub-sectors like Crops, Livestock, Forestry & Logging,
Fisheries, and Mining & Quarrying.

76. The secondary sector consists of Manufacturing, Electricity, gas, water supply &
other utility
Services, and Construction sub-sectors

77. The Tertiary sector consists sub-sectors viz., Trade & Repair Services; Hotels &
Restaurants; Transport, including Railways, Road, Water, Air & Services incidental
to Transport; Storages; Communications & Services relating to Broadcasting;
Financial services; Real Estate, Ownership of Dwellings &Professional Services;
Public Administration; and Other Services

78. The crops sector experienced a decelerating trend in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-
17, still it continues to remain a priority sector for the State because of its high
potential of employment generation, food security, inclusiveness and
sustainability of growth, as 55.7 percent of the workforce draws its subsistence
fully or partially from agriculture, in the State.

84. Per capita income is the mean income from all the sources computed for every
man, woman, and child in a geographic area, usually for a year. It is arrived at by
dividing the total income originated in a geographical area by the total
population (mid-year) in that area.

85. As per the GDDP estimates for the year 2015-16 (FRE) at current prices,
Hyderabad occupies the highest position in the State, followed by Rangareddy
and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts.

86. It is further noted that, the top four districts (viz., Hyderabad, Rangareddy,
Medchal- Malkajgiri and Sangareddy) contribute for about 52 per cent of State
GDP
JOINT STOCK COMPANIES

87. A company is an incorporated association of persons formed usually for the

pursuit of some commercial purpose. Any establishment formed and registered
under the Section 3(1) of Indian Companies Act, 2013 is known as company or a
company which is formed and registered under any of the previous company
laws is also termed as company.

BANKING

88. There are 5,003 Scheduled Commercial Bank Branches, including nationalized
banks, foreign banks, regional rural banks and private sector banks are
functioning in the State as on 31-03-2017.

89. On an average one bank branch is available for every Seven thousand population
in the State. Their credit-deposit ratio is 99.6 percent

PRICES

90. Retail Price is the price at which the ultimate consumer pays for relatively small
transactions

91. Consumer Price Index numbers is a comprehensive measure used for estimation
of price changes in a basket of goods and services representative of consumption
expenditure in an economy, over a period of time.

LABOUR AND EMPLOYMENT

92. There are, on an average 58,491 number of daily workers deployed in coal mines
of Singareni Collieries Company Limited, during 2016.

SOCIAL SECURITY

93. The Directive Principles of the constitution of India direct that “the State shall
strive to promote a social order in which justice, social, economic, and political,
shall inform all the institutions of the national life” and, in particular, shall ensure
“that the citizens, men and women equally, have the right to an adequate means
of livelihood.
EDUCATION

94. The Government of India with an objective toprovide universal education to all of
its citizenshas enacted the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education
Act, 2009 to provide free and Compulsory Education to all the children in the age
group of 6 to 14 years, in the country.

ECONOMIC CENSUS

95. The Sixth Economic Census covers all types of entrepreneurial activities in the
field of agricultural (except crops production and plantation) as well as non-
agricultural entrepreneurial activities i.e., all those economic activities dealing
with the production and/or distribution of goods/services not solely for the
purpose of own consumption

96. According to sixth Economic Census about 20.88 lakh establishments with about
55.37 lakh employees are functioning in the State.

LOCAL BODIES

98. A Gram Panchayat is the Grass root level statutory institution of Rural Self
Government in the Panchayat Raj system at the village or small town level, and
has a Sarpanch as its elected head.

99. Nagar palikas are also a form of local selfgovernment, entrusted with some
duties and responsibilities, as enshrined and guided upon by the Constitutional
(74th Amendment) Act, 1992
100. Municipal Corporation is an urban local government that works for the
development of a city, which has a population of more than one million.

101. There are 8,684 Gram Panchayats, 438 Mandal Praja Parishads, 25 Nagar
Panchayats, 42 Municipalities and 6 Municipal Corporations, the local self
governments, functioning in the State as on 31st March, 2017

103. Alisagar Deer park in Nizamabad, the Eturunagaram Sanctuary in

Jayashankar District and Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary in Mahabubabad District,

Sanctuary and Siwaram Wildlife Sanctuary in Mancherial, Mahavir Harina
