• Materials and Methods
Soil Stabilization
• Soil stabilization a general term for any physical, chemical, mechanical, biological or
combined method of changing a natural soil to meet an engineering purpose.
• This new stabilizing techniques create hydrophobic surfaces and mass that prevent road
failure from water penetration or heavy frosts by inhibiting the ingress of water into the
treated layer.
• This can often be expensive and is not a very good environmentally friendly alternative.
• Stabilization techniques include using on-site materials including sub-soils, sands, mining
waste, natural stone industry waste and crushed construction waste to provide stable, dust
free local roads for complete dust control and soil stabilization.
Magnesium Chloride
• The use of magnesium chloride on roads cause Greater safety .
• The salts MgCl2 (and CaCl2) are very soluble in water and will dissociate.
• The chloride concentration in the groundwater or surface water depends on
several factors including:
1.application rate,
2.composition and type of soil,
3.type, intensity, and amount of precipitation,
4.the drainage of the road system.
Research Gap
• Traditionally and widely accepted types of soil stabilization techniques use
products such as bitumen emulsions which can be used as a binding
agents for producing a road base.
• Portland Cement has been used as an alternative to soil stabilization.
• Cement fly ash, lime fly ash (separately, or with cement or lime), bitumen,
tar, cement kiln dust (ckd), tree resin and ionic stabilizers are all commonly
used stabilizing agents.
Objective of the study
• This research studies durabilty, permeability and treatment of roads that
can be regraded and re-compacted with less concern for losing moisture
and density.
• The study mainly focused in examining the durabilty and permeability of
using seaweeds by determining its strength by different test.
• To examine the percentage rate of seaweed that needed to yield at 10% to
20% of magnesium chloride.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
• The Seaweeds that to be tested in the experiment is from island garden
city of samal Davao city. The laboratory tests considered in conducting and
determining the effectiveness are the Soil stabilty test, soil testing, Ground
improvements ,size, and structure of compacted soil.
Scope and Limitions
• The study is just mainly focused in examining the durabilty and
permeability of using seaweeds for soil stabilizer.
• If Using seaweeds as soil stabilizer is safe in the environment.
• How effective using seaweed as soil stabilizer.
Materials and Methods
• Input:Optimum percentage of seaweed with varying percentages of
50%-60%, sodium chloride and magnesium chloride. Soil that will be
conducted is base on the area .
• Process:soil stability test,compacting test,texture and type of soil
• Output:Interpreting the result By graphs and charts compare the soil
stabilty with seaweed to the standards
Materials and Methods
• Soil stabilty test
• Permeability test
• Initial Surface Absorption Test
• Rapid chloride penetration test
Materials and Methods
• The materials to be used in the study include the significant amount of
seaweed. Soil will be acquired in Matina gravahan Davao City. The
materials to be used in this study include the significant amount of the
seaweeds that we make as powder. All of this materials will be acquired
at certain area of Matina Davao City will be take it to the Laboratory.
• compaction rod, weighing balance, hammer, nail, ruler and oil.
