F117 aircraft design

Despite its unique

shape and silhouette
the F117 also utilizes
the configurations
and designs of
common aircraft. The
same principles are
being applied in
designing its parts.
Major Design Theme:

Minimal to
No Curves
F117 Construction and materials

While pushing for a revolution in stealth

aircraft technology, the engineers were
limited to using only certain types of fuel
to limit detection through afterburner
emissions. Due to this, the aircraft had to
reduce weight and the engineers
resorted to using aluminum in
constructing most of its frame.
F117 parts and equipment

The F117s were constructed with

subsystems “borrowed” from other
military programs. The engines
and cockpit design were also
repurposed from older jet
programs at the time.
The primary role of
the development of
the F117 was to
enhance stealth
aircraft technology and
warfare. Even though
it used similar systems
to that of other
fighters in its era, it is
significantly weaker in
terms of performance
