Last week, Nancy and Jim
Goodwin, owners of Goody’s
Juice and Java in downtown
Manistee, sent the following
letter to their fellow downtown
businesses:
“Most of you have probably
heard that Goody’s has been sold
and we want to tell you directly
that this is the case. A year ago
this month we sent out a letter
letting you know our intentions
to sell. In that letter we said that
this was succession planning for
us and that we were looking for
just the right person to take over
the business. We have found
that person in Rita Blamer. Rita
has been in the coffee business
for over a decade and owns two
coffee shops in the Grand Haven
area. She is enthusiastic, dedicat-
ed and best of all loves Manistee.
She will be an on-site manager
and not an absentee owner. She
will continue using the Goody’s
name; keep our current staff and
offering quality service and prod-
ucts. Rita will be taking owner-
ship in May.
“Our sale took about one year
from the time we sent you that
letter and happened without
any active advertising. Also, it
occurred during one of the worst
economic times in Michigan. We
think that this happened for a
few reasons:
“1. We were committed to
keeping Goody’s in Manistee and
weren’t leaving ‘til we replaced
ourselves.
“2. Goody’s is a very success-
ful business with a proven track
record.
“3. Last, but not least is the
strength of our downtown. Some
Manistee residents think there
is nothing downtown.They want
the 1950’s big department stores
to come back and that just isn’t
going to happen. Here’s what
we like to do with that naysayer
-- we ask them how often they
visit downtown, we inform them
that River Street today, even
without the future impact the
Vogue will have, is healthier than
70 percent of downtowns and
we suggest they visit one of the
numerous successful businesses

Control’s 25th year in business in

founder, Jack Rutherford, moved
here in 1985 while working for
Thumb Pest Control. He fell in
love with the people and the
community instantly and when
Thumb Pest Control moved to
Florida, Jack chose to stay in
Manistee and with $3,000 and
Ford truck he began Action
Termite & Pest Control.
By April 1989 the company
was already a success and in
2000 Jack’s oldest son, Jim
Rutherford, and his wife Melanie
purchased the company and
continued to grow. With the pur-
chase of a new office in 2010 the
company includes a self storage
business, a dog training facility
that trains bed bug detection, a
retail center with do-it-yourself
pest control products, and the

two water exercise classes this spring to
help participants improve their physical
fitness.
Both Aqua Aerobics and Aquacise
offer cardiovascular exercise as well as
toning and strengthening for the body.
Aqua Aerobics meets on Mondays and
Wednesdays from 5 until 6 p.m. and
Aquacise, a lower impact class geared for
people with arthritis or joint pain, meets
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 until 10
a.m. and from 10 until 11 a.m.
The classes will be held at the Paine
Aquatic Center at Manistee High School,
525 12th St., Manistee. The therapy pool
at the aquatic center features a warm,
comfortable water temperature and private
changing rooms and showers.
Classes run April 4 through May 12 and
there is a registration fee, however Health
Connection membership is not required.
Registration can be completed by call-

Yes, technology is a wonderful thing,

our bodies is still vital in making sure we

annual Michigander
Bicycle Tour
LANSING — This July, the Michigan
Trails and Greenways Alliance is offer-
ing Michigan residents a different type
of “staycation” — a biking adventure in
southwest Michigan.
Registration is now open for the 20th
annual Michigander Bicycle Tour, slated
for July 16-22, which will take bicycling
enthusiasts of all ages on a tour of 12 of
southwest Michigan’s most scenic rail
trails and back roads, including the Kal-
Haven State Park Trail, the Fred Meijer
White Pine Trail and the Musketawa Trail.
“The Michigander caters to a diverse
group of participants. From experienced
cyclists to beginning riders, road cyclists
to mountain bikers, all outdoor enthu-
siasts can enjoy the tour,” said Nancy
Krupiarz, executive director of MTGA.
The event has three tour options, a
two-day weekend tour on July 16 and 17,
a six-day tour July 17-22 and a seven-day
tour July 16-22. Averaging 45-55 miles a
day, participants will experience wilder-
ness areas and historical landmarks as

up, she had some other
duties added like working
as a lunchroom monitor,
and in the library.
Morgan said the MAPS
band students are pretty
good at taking care of their
instruments, but they still
periodically breakdown.
Sometimes the problems
are complex, but she also
smiles at the thought of
some that result from
inquisitive young minds at
the elementary level.
“A lot times the little
kids will take things apart
and all it needs is to be
put back together,” said
Morgan. “Other times they
have something simple like
a valve stem or spring has
come loose. Another prob-
lem is there are thin pieces
of cork under and between
the keys that pops off.
Morgan said she doesn’t
spend a great deal of time
on repairs, but the kids
still bring things to her
attention fairly regularly.
