The text below is an article that will inform you about the relationship between
communication and technology through social media and how both interact in the
preservation of humanity and the world.
Madrunio and martin (2018) state that there are various modes through which people
communication with each other. These modes transformed from handwritten messages to
audio/video recorded messages. The rise and spread of internet connectivity have paved the
way for a faster and more accessible form of communication. One of the platforms where
people use to discuss their issues and opinions is through social media.
Social media are computer tools that allow people to share or exchange information,
ideas, images, videos, and even more through a particular network (Siddiqui and
Singh,2016). It includes social networking sites dominated by Facebook with 271 billion users
followed by YouTube with 19 billion viewers and messaging services such as WhatsApp with
users and Facebook Messenger with 13 billion users (Hootsuite, 2019).
The result reveals that there 3.38 billion Filipinos who are engaged in the social media
on mobile devices which goes to show how Filipinos like to keep in touch (Isberto, cited in
Camus, 2017).
Social media affects people’s way of communication, like the Filipinos, but also impacts
the world in various fields, such as education, business, health, and society (Siddiqui and
Singh, 2016). Especially at this time pandemic, social media has become an influential
platform which relatively inexpensive and widely accessible electronic tools that facilitate
anyone to publish and access information, collaborate on a collective effort, or build a
relationship’ (ibid, p.71).
While the world is in crisis, people are put into social distance and suffer the pain of
loneliness. Still, technology forges people’s intimacy across borders and distances through
social media like Facebook (Cabalquinto, 2018). However, there is always a downfall where
social media panic traveled faster than the COVID-19 spread (Wilson & Chen,2020). Thus, a
balance of information using social media harnessed for the safety of humanity and the world.
