Lesson 2: Divisibility Rules
WEEK 2
At the end of the lesson, the pupil will be able to:
 uses divisibility rules for 4, 8, 12, and 11 to find common factors.-M5NS-Ib-58.3
 solves routine and non-routine problems involving factors, multiples, and divisibility rules for
2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,11, and 12.- M5NS-Ic-59

Think about this!

Matt and Phoebe volunteered to help their teachers prepare bags of rice to be given to the
flood victims in a nearby barangay. A total of 420 kilograms (kg) of rice will be repacked and
placed in bags. If 100 families should receive the rice donation, how many kilograms of rice must
they put in a bag to produce as many bags of rice as possible?
If they put 2 kg of rice per bag, they can make 210 bags of rice; for 3 kilograms of rice, 140
bags will be produced; for 4 kg of rice, 105 bags will be produced; and for 5 kg of rice, 84 bags
will be produced.
Which quantity of rice should they choose to make sure that each of the 100 families receives
bag with ample quantity of rice?

Discuss!

Based on the choices given for the problem, we can see that the number 420 can be exactly
divided by 2, 3, 4, and 5. Thus, 420 is divisible by 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Any whole number is divisible by another whole number if their quotient has no remainder.
Divisibility means that you can divide a whole number by another whole number evenly.
Remember that a whole number id divisible by its factor.
Performing division to find out if a number is divisible by another number can be tedious,
especially if the given number (dividend) is quite big. That is why divisibility rules are applied
instead.

Divisibility rules or divisibility tests are ways of determining whether a whole

number is divisible by another whole number without doing actual division. It
is done by examining the digits of a number.

Here are the divisibility rules and some examples that apply them.

DIVISIBILITY BY 4

A number is divisible by 4if its last two digits form a number that is divisible by 4or if its last
two digits are both zeros.
Example 3: Is 12 316 is divisible by 4?

Answer: Because the last two digits-which is 16-is divisible by 4, thus 12 316 is
divisible by 4.

DIVISIBILITY BY 8
1
Name: _____________________________ Grade: 5

A number is divisible by 8 if its last three digits form a number that is divisible by 8 or if its last
three digits are all zeros.

Example 6: Is 652 320 is divisible by 8?

Answer: The last three digits form the number 320. Because 320 is divisible by 8,
thus 562 320 is divisible by 8.

DIVISIBILITY BY 11

To test whether a number is divisible by 11, subtract the sums of the alternating digits
(beginning from the left). If the result is 11 or 0, then the number is divisible by 11.

Example 9: Test if the following numbers are divisible by 11.

a. 946
b. 1 361
c. 25 784
Answer:
a. 946 (9 + 6) – 4 = 15 – 4 = 11
946 is divisible by 11.
b. 1 361 (1 + 6) – (3 + 1) = 7 – 4 = 3
1 361 is not divisible by 11.
c. 25 784 (2 + 7 + 4) – (5 + 8) = 13 – 13 = 0
25 784 is divisible by 11.
DIVISIBILITY BY 12

A number is divisible by 12 if it is by both 3 and 4.

Example 10: The number 924 is divisible by 12. Can you show why?
Answer: You need to show the number is divisible by both 3 and 4.
By the divisibility rule for 3:
9 + 2 + 4 = 15 Therefore, 924 is divisible by 3.
By the divisibility rule for 4:
942 Since 24 is divisible by 4, 924 is divisible by 4.

This shows that if a number is divisible another number then it is also divisible by each of
the factors of that number.

Let’s find out!

Factors are numbers that we multiply together to get another number.

Example: What are the factors of 40?

Answer: 2 ×20=40 4 ×10=40 5 ×8=40
The factors of 40 are 2 and 20, 4 and 10, and 5 and 8.

Multiples is the product of a number and any counting number.

Example: What are the multiples of 8?

Answer: 8 ×1=8 8 ×3=24 8 ×5=40
8 ×2=16 8 × 4=32
The multiples of 8 are 8, 16, 24, 32, 40…..

Steps in Solving word problem

1. UNDERSTAND
a) What is asked?
b) What are the given facts?
2. PLAN
a) What strategy can we use to solve the problem?
3. SOLVE
a) Perform or we need to apply the strategy being used?
4. CHECK
a) We check if your answer satisfies the clues given.

Example: Teacher Rye’s age is greater than 40 but less than 50. his age is divisible by 2, 4, 6,
8, and 12. how old is Teacher Rye?
Answer:
1. Understand
What is asked?
- the age of Teacher Rye

What are the given facts?

- age is greater than 40
- age is less than 50
- age is divisible by 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12
2. Plan
We will use listing and elimination method.

3. Solve

2 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49
4 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49
6 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49
8 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49
12 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49

4. Check

48 is divisible by 2
48 is divisible by 4
48 is divisible by 6
48 is divisible by 8
48 is divisible by 12
Since all this clues are met, we conclude that the age of Teacher Rye is 48.
