Route: While there is a no set of standards to become a care assistant, some need the
practicality of information. The first and most important thing is to complete
secondary education in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Along with this, some prefer
First Aid skill and NVQ in Health and Social care, with levels 2 and 3. The chances of
career progression in care assistant are minimal. Moreover, a person's salary is
excellent and earns £15 per hour and £16,800 per annum (CARE ASSISTANT
CAREER PATH, 2020).
Next Step: While working as a care assistant, every person needs some career
progression. There is no progression apart from enhancement in personal skills in care
assistants. A person leads to engage in day-to-day activity and help others overcome
difficult situations. Some significant opportunities for a person could be senior
worker, senior care assistant, healthcare assistant, night care assistant. Thus, these are
specialized roles for a person to engage as care assistants.
Duties and essential skills: The care assistant performs a regular interaction with the
disabled person. Thus, the care assistant needs to pursue some duties and
responsibilities. Some of the skills required to become a care assistant include:
o Caring
o Respect
o Communication
o Empathy
o Customer care
With all these skills set, a care assistant needs to perform some duties. The duties are
described as below:
The primary duty is to support people for regular operations like dressing,
washing, retaining personal hygiene.

Support disabled people in admin duties like paying bills, going for fun
activities, etc.
Care assistant helps in improving the standard of living.
Typical day:A care assistant job is not an easy task and needs so much effort. The
schedule is hectic and not an easy job. It starts with personal care of a person, washing
and turning patients, assist them in dressing, mobilizing & feeding, etc. All such roles
are needed to perform by a person in an entire day (Chevron, 2017).
Best thing and challenge in job:Care assistant task is to support physically and
mentally disabled people. The best thing as a care assistant would be to understand
the people and their behavior. A person can learn various people's nature, behavior,
attitude. With some good things, there are few challenges for a care assistant (Five of
The Challenges Care Workers Face & How To Overcome Them, 2019):
o Resistance of care by the service user
o Transport arrangement for every appointment
o Management of shifts and routine
o Communication with Healthcare professionals
Tips for starting a career: If a person finds a care assistant as a good career option,
certain things are essential to understand. The first thing is to complete certificate III
in Individual Support. Along with this, it is crucial to complete a traineeship.
Moreover, a calm mind and meditation are essential to relieve stress.
Leadership
Communication skill
Team building
Customer care
These four skills are essential for me to become a good care assistant. The three skills will be
going define as follow:
5
Communication skill: The first most important skill is communication (McCorry, and
Mason, 2020). As a care assistant, I have to work on my communication skill. I have
to select suitable language while facilitating communication with patients. Moreover,
communication allows me to deal with external healthcare professionals. Healthcare
professionals need a formal environment of communication. Thus, I need to remain
focus on the formal environment and communication. Moreover, I will learn sign
language as well. Sign language allows communicating with deaf people. Sometimes,
physically challenged people can't communicate properly with others. As a care
assistant, I have to learn to support physically and mentally disabled people. I have
good command on written as well so that I can write letters to external healthcare
professionals and assist disabled people.
Team Building:Another critical aspect for me is team building ((Davison and
Lindqvist, 2020). One of my strengths is cooperation with staff members and others.
This can help me in the team-building process. While working in a team, I am
responsible for my actions. In a team, my role is to support members while face any
issue or problem.I will also manage tasks that perform by them and distribute them as
per their skills and potential. I will also guide them in case of difficulty. All such
things are essential while working as a unit. Belbin's team-building model allows me
to deploy a perfect team to derive the best result. My work in a team helps facilitate
care to physically and mentally disabled people. Team building can help me handle
them and develop specific skills like management, organizing, support, etc. One
primary reason to work in a team is to improvise strength and work on a weakness.
Team building exercises are helpful in collaboration between people rather than
competition. For team building, all members need to organize specific activities so
that a relationship between each other forms for future goals and targets.
Customer care:Every business needs to manage and handle the customer base for
profit. In the health care sector, patients are ultimate care users and considerthe
customer. Professionals need to treat people right and support them. The care assistant
is responsible for managing people actively. It develops a skill of customer care in a
person. I have managed certain clients successfully and provide the appropriate care
and support. This has helped them to recover earlier. Some of the essential things for
customer care skills are clear communication, reliability, problem-solving, integrity,
etc. These things are necessary to build and develop effective customer care skills. As
