SYLLABUS

Course Code/Title: PSY112/Industrial/Organizational Psychology


Course Credit: 3 units

Course Description:

This is a survey course discussing the research and theory as it relates to the following topics:
job evaluation, employee selection, employee motivation and satisfaction, group processes
and leadership, and organizational change and development. Human factors of I/O
Psychology may also be considered.

Project-based learning will also be incorporated into the course in the manner of a case study
assignment. This assignment is given to aid the student in their comprehension of the “real
world” presentation of some of the materials covered throughout the semester.

Learning Outcomes/Competencies:

After successful completion of the course, evidence of competencies is based on learning


outcomes. Students are expected to:

1. Assess the role played by psychology in the analysis and solution of organizational
problems (PO3 – Self-reflection/Independent Learning);
2. Recognize and analyze cultural and behavioral techniques at the disposal of those
concerned with organization development (PO1-- Knowledge in I/O Psychology;
PO3 – Self-reflection/Independent Learning);
3. Recognize and outline the different facets of organizational life associated with stress
(PO1 – Knowledge in I/O Psychology; PO2 -- Application of I/O Psychology);
4. Examine the role of ethics in the practice of I/O Psychology (PO1-- Knowledge in
I/O Psychology; PO2 – Application of I/O Psychology; PO6 -- Ethics);
5. Defend the utility of industrial/organizational psychology through research (PO2
--Psychological Research/Application of I/O Psychology; PO6 -- Ethics).

Course Requirements:

 Case studies: 100 points

Each of you will work with one another in peer groups to conduct an interview with
an administrator, a personnel/human resource officer, and an on-the-job trainee (the
choice is yours). With the information gathered from the interview, each peer group
will be responsible for the write-up of the case study as well as its presentation to the
class online. The format of the case study is a free-style. Use your creativity. This will
be a peer-group task; however, your individual performance will be evaluated.

 Individual reflection: 150 points (10 points for each chapter)

You will have the opportunity to reflect on your own experience with learning of the
course. This will be an ongoing assignment that you will work on throughout the
course of the semester. Thus, log-booking/journaling is necessary.

 Chapter activities:

There are 5 chapter-activities (each chapter-activity is composed of 3 chapters) which


are measured by providing correct answers to the Questions for Review found at the
end of every chapter.

 Comprehensive examination: 100 points

A comprehensive examination is administered to finally measure student


competencies and/or learning of the course.

Grading Rubric/Parameter:

Evaluation and grades will be based upon satisfactory completion of the course requirements.
Final course grades will be computed in terms of percent equivalents of the total accumulated
score obtained by the student.
