JOURNAL 1

On the first day of our work immersion, we had our interview with the assigned
personnel for our in-campus work immersion. I and my partner were assigned with the
electricians of Claret School of Zamboanga City.

The nature of their work as electricians are to deal with wiring connections around the
campus. They are to fix and install necessary connections. One of their major responsibilities as
electricians are to respond with problems concerning with the wiring connections, installation of
lights, bells and all, and they also fix appliances as well. According to them, as electricians, their
greatest professional strength would be installation of appliances and wirings, because that’s
their nature when it comes to their work. But they also have weaknesses like of those others, all
of us does. Providing for personal needs and budgeting are the things that they consider as their
weaknesses, well according to them, their salary is not enough to provide for their own needs and
the needs of their Family, but not at all times, there are just times in which they need more than
what they can provide. So to cope up with this, they learned how to budget for their daily lives
and for emergencies as well, so that there will be enough money to provide for their needs when
in times of emergencies.

On the same day of my learning log 1 interview, I saw the in action while fixing the bell,
the equipment that they used, the wires, tools and their coordination with each other while doing
their task, and that is to install the new bell that Claret School of Zamboanga City had. There
were nothing much of equipment to see, because the others were kept inside their office, and that
those are used for other purposes as well. I also heard them using terms that are only used on
electronics, like the conductivity of a materials and etc.

After my interview on learning log 1, I realized that jobs are unique from one another, so
deep learning to master the nature of your job. Because if you want to be good at something, you
have to keep learning, learning doesn’t stop from college, even at work, we still learn things that
are new to us, things that are beyond work. Let’s take our time, and be great at what we do.

The Electricians also shared that they are also capable of upgrading facilities concerning
electrical stuff. Where in a thing that is simple can be complex or better, they can also fix
something with a thing of resourcefulness, like a certain part of a fan can be used to fix other
industrial stuff. As for their rating for their fitness to their current job, they rated themselves with
a score of 9 out of 10, because they know that they are actually doing well in doing their
responsibilities, and they can provide for their family with the job that they have as of now. They
use their family as their inspiration to work harder, and do well on their job or responsibility as
electricians in order to provide a better and comfortable life for them.

They also showed us different tools and equipment used by electricians. They also taught
us how to use it and when and where do they use it. Specifically they showed us the devise they
use for testing the conductivity and connectivity of a wire from one end to another, they even
allowed us to do it ourselves. They also taught us some terms used to describe the results from
the readings of different devices and some technical terms that they use whenever they do some
installations and upgrades.

After learning all this stuff from them, I realized that listening is different from just
hearing things. Because in listening you digest what you hear from others, but when you are just
hearing things, you don’t learn anything from it. In listening we can acquire knowledge that we
might need in the future, it is very important to listen from others as well, because in that, we
become better and we know better than before. We listen, we understand, we learn, we become
better versions of ourselves.

Electricians also has their own standards of their own. Whenever they see the things that
they upgraded and installed around the school, they feel proud of themselves for they know that
they did those, they consider it as their accomplishment. And because of this, they drive each
other to do more, to do better. But in all of the working environment, conflicts are inevitable.
There are certain times that we need to face certain problems with someone or may it be
technical problems. As for the Claret School of Zamboanga City’s electricians, they also have
faced problems concerning their superiors, but they knew how to handle it in a calm way by
adjusting and understanding different personalities. They deal with their impatient clients and
superiors by calming them down with their communicating skills.

I can see that the electricians were able to build a bond among themselves, a bond that is
beyond from being just workmates. They built it during their work times, because even at work,
they share their personal problems and stories with each other, this paved the way for them to
have great bond with one another. They created this bond through effective communication
that’s why they were able to talk to each other comfortably like friends do.

With this information that I gathered from my interview, I realized that in whatever path
we take, we meet different person with different personalities, may it be pleasing for us or not.
But with the right mind set and the right manner to interact with them we can build relationships
and bond with whoever we want to or feel comfortable to, making our work place at peace and
friendly. And when you have great relationship with your co-workers, you start to treat them as
your family, and your work place becomes your home with them.

The electricians of CSZC shared to us that among them, they show their concern to each
other by lifting each other’s spirits through hard times with a good fit of laughter. Nothing beats
a good humour they say. They make their co-workers feel that they always have each other with
the laughter they share with each other. But they also do experience problems with
communication, may it be technical or random. The absence of walky-talky makes it hard for
them to contact the other electrician who is far, because they sometime needs to work from one
end to another, and the distance is way too long for them to hear each other, so the walky-talky
helps a lot. They also told us that loving your work or loving what you are doing in your career,
just enjoy and love it for good results may come unto you, they consider it as the most important
job values.

Seeing their smiles and how they treat each other with concern through a brotherly love
to each other makes it seem like life is never better with the right people to surround you.
Because seeing them entertain each other during work through small talks and jokes, it
seems like they are not working, their just doing what they love to do, what makes them good at.
And the presence of respect with each other is visible, through their words and action, especially
with their seniors, even if they often joke with one another, they still make sure that respect is
considered to avoid conflict. They still have their limitations even if they treat each other as
friends or family.

With this learning log, I have realized that a good communication builds a good
relationship with others, it’s essential to everyone. Because when you work, you do not work as
an island, you work with others, others that may or may not have the same values with you, but
with good communication, you can build relationship with them. Miscommunication may lead to
problems, so think before you speak. And another thing is, your love and passion for work brings
out the best in you. Just love what you are doing and everything will follow.
