(Exploratory Course) Self- Directed Learning Materials (SDLM) on Sewing Tools and
Equipment and Their Uses.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the Technology and Livelihood Education 7/8 – Dressmaking
(Exploratory Course) Self- Directed Learning Materials (SDLM) on Sewing Tools and
Equipment and Their Uses.

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!

Let Us Study

Lesson SEWING TOOLS AND

1 EQUIPMENT AND THEIR
USES
Clothing is one of man’s necessity and has become an important part of
society. The practice of wearing clothes began as a way to keep the body warm and
survive the different types of weather. People also express themselves through the
clothes they wear and the manner of clothing depends on individual taste and
style. There are many careers out of studying clothing and fashion. In this modern

2
age and society, fashion and clothing pave its way as one of the country’s rising
industry. Tailors and dressmakers play an important part in the business where
talent and skills in clothing construction is a well-priced ability.

In our lesson, we will discover the tools and equipment and its uses in
dressmaking and tailoring, its importance, and opportunities through this learning
journey. It will give you the desire to explore your creativity and enhance your skills
in dressmaking. As we move to our lesson, you will encounter some activities that
will boost your knowledge and challenge your thinking skills.

Sewing is a basic skill that is a cost-

effective hobby. A sewing skill is a lifesaver it
will give you an ability to fix, repair, and
create things with your hands. It seems like
you’re a superhero, right! Every superhero
you must-have tools and equipment for you to
use.
Before we get to know the tools and
equipment in sewing let us know the
difference between tools and equipment.

Source: https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/14144186303843851/

Sewing tools are those which don't require the use of electricity, these
are tools that are used manually or by hand such as scissors and measuring tape.
Equipment would be the heavy-duty items such as the sewing machine itself, an
iron, serger, steamer

Appropriate sewing tools are needed and one must know the specific use of
each tool to avoid mistakes. The skillful use of the different sewing equipment
will help take body measurement and drafting patterns with accuracy and speed.
The lesson will provide knowledge and skills of the different tools and
equipment which are necessary for sewing. A complete set of sewing tools and
equipment are presented to help the students work faster.

Measuring Tools

TAPE MEASURE
A flexible measuring device is used in
taking body measurements. The front
has a measurement of 150 centimeters
and 60 inches on the other side.

SEWING GAUGE
A small ruler with a sliding guide and
is about six inches long. This gauge is
used for measurements at hemlines,
buttonholes, and areas where other
small measurements require
checkings, such as pleats and tucks.
The gauge is usually made of metal or

RULER
A ruler measuring 12 inches or even 18
inches, either clear or
solid. It is a useful tool to have for
measuring and drawing straight
seamlines and cutting lines. It also aids
in connecting lines. A clear ruler is also
a good tool for marking buttonholes.

L- SQUARE
The tailor square or "L" is used to
transfer measurements to the draft
pattern. It also divides the garment into
the desired measurement. It has
perfect squares and is useful in making
straight lines and numbers. It can also
function as a tape measure. It has two
arms connected perpendicularly.
a. The longer arm is twenty-four (24)
inches long.
b. The shorter arm is fourteen (14) Source:https://docs.google.com/viewer?

CUTTING TOOLS
Cutting tools are instruments that serve well if properly maintained. Sharp
cutting tools make clean cuts and well-defined notches and they do not damage
the fabric. On other hand, dull tools slow the cutting process and make your
hand and wrist tire easily. Sewing cutting tools should not be used for other
household tasks. Cutting tools must be sharpened regularly and the joints are
oiled occasionally for better use.
Bent-handled dressmaker’s shears
These are made of quality steel and
hold a sharp cutting edge.
The blades move easily and cut
smoothly along the entire length and
the points should come together.
Shears have a length of 7- 12 inches
and are satisfactory for most apparel
fabrics.
a. All steels, chrome-plated shears are
for heavy-duty cutting
b.Stainless steel blades and plastic
handles are fine for lightweight fabrics Source:https://docs.google.com/viewer?

Pinking Shears
This is popular in zigzagging or
scalloped edge or for seam finishes.
This is used to finish seams and raw
edges and to create decorative edges on
many types of fabric. It cuts a ravel-
resistant edge. This is not satisfactory
for straight cutting. Source:https://docs.google.com/viewer?

Marking tools are required for transferring pattern markings to garment fabric
pieces and for making alterations on garments.
