The Good Filipino Citizens
We focus less on the sins of everybody as our primary concern and look more to our individual
obligations as a good human beings and productive citizens of the republic. We have To look at
ourselves, our faults, and our challenges to better ourselves. The book “ 12 Little Things Every
Filipino Can Do To Help Our Country” by Alex Lacson can give as knowledge how to be a
better Filipino Citizen.
Morals of Good Citizenry
A good Filipino Citizen is the one who plays an active and intelligent role as a member of a
community. The one who fulfils his/her duties and obligations of the government and society.
The one who possesses the traits of respectfulness, courtesy, and consideration for parents and
elders and for others. The one that observes punctuality, promptness, and good moral conduct.
There are four characteristics of an individual shall Filipino have; maka-Diyos , maka-tao,
makakalikasan, at makabansa.
Patriotism and Nationalism in the Philippines
Patriotism vs. Nationalism is often used interchangeably, meaning one for the other. But there is
a wide distinction between nationalism and patriotism as political concepts. Nationalism
etymologically means love, care for, preservation and patronage of one’s native land and
everything in it- the country of birth of a national, whether it be Filipino or otherwise. While
patriotism is willingness and determination to lay down one’s life for the fatherland- the constant
resolve to sacrifice one’s life and limb for the preservation of the state. It is the total realization
of that love for the country, which is nationalism. In other words, to be patriotic is to be
nationalistic. Conversely, one cannot be patriotic without being nationalistic.
What is Good Governance?
Good governance is an approach to government that is committed to creating a system founded
in justice and peace that protects individual’s human rights and civil liberties. Good governance
is measured by eight factors of participation , rule of law, transparency, responsiveness,
consensus oriented, equity and inclusiveness, effectiveness and efficiency, and accountability.
Right to suffrage
Right to suffrage is essential for it is fair and right that those who must obey laws should have a
voice in making them, and that those who must pay taxes should have a vote as to the size of the
tax and the way it shall be spent.
Why do we vote?
First is our votes give victory to candidates, it also helps sustain our political system in its
entirety. We are not only electing individual candidates but we are also justifying the existence
of our country’s political system. Votes give victory, voter turnout gives legitimacy to a political
system. As a members of a state, citizens have the capacity to determine its persistence,
development, or demise. Second, this question opens up another path to other relevant and oft-
asked question “ who should we vote for ?” in relation to “ why should we vote?” then we are
necessitated to analyse and arrive at conclusions on how should the political system and elected
serve our interests.
