4 stage process of self development:

1. imitation

2. play - the child takes different roles they observe in


"adult" society. and plays them out to gain understanding
of the different soial roles. the child learns to become
both subject and object and begins to become able to build
a self.

3. game - the child must take the role of everyone else


involved in the game. organization begins and
personalities definite emerge.

4. the generalized other - the individual understands what


kind of behavior is expected or appropriate in different
social settings.

is regarded as a persisting entity in a particular stage of
life by which a person is recognize or known.
