Geometry problems

is a branch of mathematics that studies the sizes, shapes, positions angles and
dimensions of things.
Flat shapes like squares, circles, and triangles are a part of flat geometry and are
called 2D shapes. These shapes have only 2 dimensions, the length and the width.

Solid objects are also known as 3D objects having the third dimension of height or
depth.
Examples of 3D shapes in solid geometry

1.The length and breadth of a square are increased by 40% and 30% respectively.
the area of resulting rectangle exceeds the area of the square by

Let a m. be the length of each side of a square . Its area = a^2 sq.units.
Let the square have sides of 100 cm.

Area = 100

Apply Concern formula - 100^2

Hence its area is 100x100 = 10000 sq cm.

The sides of the rectangle are 140 cm (40% more than 100 cm)and 130 cm (30%
more than 100 cm), so its area = 140x130 = 18200 sq cm.

Difference = 18200 – 10000 = 8200

% = 8200/10000 x 100 = 82% increased.

2.If the radius of a circle is decreased by 50%, find the percentage decrease in its
area.

Let assume that the radius is 14cm.

Area=πr^2.

= 22 / 7 x 14 x 14 = 616

Let assume that the radius is 7 cm.

= 22 / 7 x 7 x 7 = 154

As per the question, 616 – 154 = 462

% = 462 / 616 x 100 = 75 reduced.

3.The length of a rectangle is increased by 60%.by what percent would the width
have to be decreased to maintain the same area
Area 1
Area of the rectangle = l x b
Let assume = 100 x 60 = 6000
Area 2 - Area 1
100 * 60 = 160 * X
6000 = 160X
X = 6000 / 160 = 37.5
Difference = 60 – 37.5 = 22.5
% = 22.5 / 60 x 100 = 37.5 %

4.The length of a rectangle is twice its breadth. If its length is decreased by

5 cm and breadth is increased by 5 cm, the area of the rectangle is increased by 75
sq.cm. What is the length of the rectangle?

Length=2b
Breadth=X

Length=2x

Area 2 – Area 1 = 75

(l – 5 ) (b + 5 ) – lb = 75

(2X – 5) ( X + 5) – (2X) (X) = 75

2X^2 + 10X – 5X – 25 – 2X^2 = 75

5X – 25 = 75

5X = 100
X = 20.

X means b = 20

As per the question l = 2x so 40

5.Arun makes a popular brand of ice-cream in a rectangular shaped bar 6 cm long,

5 cm wide and 2 cm thick. To cut costs, the company had decided to reduce the
volume of the bar by 19%. The thickness will remain the same, but the length and
width will be decreased by the same percentage. The new width will be

Volume = l x b x h

6 cm long, 5 cm wide and 2 cm thick.

=6x5x2

V1 = 60

19 % reduced = 60 x 19 / 100

= 11.4 , = 60 – 11.4 = 48.6

V2 – 48.6

H=H

L = 6 * x / 100

W = 5 * x/100

6 * x / 100 * 5 * x/100 * 2 = 48.6

60x^2 = 486000

x^2 = 486000 / 60

x^2 =8100
x = √ 8100

x = 90

w = 5 * x /100

= 5 x 90/100

W = 4.5
