Title: Heat Exchanger Tube Inspection By Iris

1.0 SCOPE
This procedure describes the minimum requirements to carry out the IRIS tube
inspection on the Heat exchanger tubes.

2.0 REFERENCE:
2.1 ASME SEC V Article 4,5
2.2 IRIS Inspection Operation Manual

3.0 PERSONNEL
The personnel operating the equipment shall be trained in this method and shall be
qualified at least ASNT Level II in UT.

4.0 Equipment Setup

4.1 All connections to power supply is 110 V AC
4.2 Connect IRIS m/c X, Y, Z terminals to Oscilloscope such that X to 3or4, Y to
1or2, Z to Rear socket terminal respectively through the BNC cables.
4.3 Connect the Submersible pump through garden hose to the Filter unit. Connect
return water hose from the Filter unit to the tank.
4.4 Place the submersible pump in the tank in upright position.
4.5 Fill the tank with clean potable water.
4.6 Connect the ‘T’ piece of the probe cable to the Filter unit.
4.7 Also connect the 3-meter BNC cable between the ‘T’ piece and to the terminal
at front face of the IRIS m/c.
4.8 Connect the probe-centering device to the probe cable sheath allowing the
cable end to appear on the end.
4.9 Fit the Turbine to the centering device enclosing the probe.

5.0 Calibration.
5.1 Switch on the IRIS m/c, Oscilloscope and the pump.
5.2 Warm up the equipment for 15 minutes.
5.3 Calibrate the screen using the standard stainless steel piece to match the image
of fig.3.4, on page 19 in the operation manual.

6.0 Examination.
6.1 Make sure the tubes are clean and free from oil, thick deposit.
6.2 Flood the tube with clean potable water from any free end.
6.3 Insert the probe assembly into the tube till it reaches the other end.
6.4 Adjust the Damping knob and Tube wall knob on the IRIS m/c to get the
clear image of the tube wall cross section.

outer wall.
6.7 Record the images with Polaroid camera and also measure the defect
orientation in the tube.
6.8 Evaluate the size of the pitting and prepare a Test Report depicting the
degradation levels on the tube sheet sketch with different color code.
