Title: Guided Bend Test of Steel Specimens.

1.0 SCOPE
This procedure specifies the general requirements of Guided Bend test for
determination of soundness and ductility of welds in ferrous and non-ferrous metals at
room temperature using Universal Testing Machine.

2.0 REFERENCES
2.1 ASTM E190 Standard test method for guided bend test for ductility of welds.
2.2 ASME SEC IX Welding and brazing qualifications.
2.3 AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code, steel.

3.0 EQUIPMENT
3.1Universal testing machine (Type UTE-60) with the test jig and loading unit with
hydraulic system shall be used for the test.

4.0 TESTING PERSONNEL

4.1Qualified personnel with adequate working experience shall conduct the test and
record the results as per the requirements.

5.0 TEST SPECIMEN

5.1The type of specimen generally used for guided bend testing is rectangular ones
machined from plates and pipes. Specimen sizes shall be as per the attachments #04
and #05.
5.2 For transverse side bend test, the weld transverse to the longitudinal axis of the
specimen, which is bent so that either one side of the side surface becomes the
convex surface of the bent specimen. For transverse face bend test, the weld
transverse to the longitudinal axis of the specimen which is bent so that the weld face
surface becomes the convex surface of the bent specimen. For transverse root bend
test, the weld transverse to the longitudinal axis of the specimen which is bent so that
the weld root surface becomes the convex surface of the bent specimen.
5.3 For longitudinal face bend test, the weld parallel to the longitudinal axis of the
specimen which is bent so that the weld face surface becomes the convex surface of
the bent specimen. For longitudinal root bend test, the weld parallel to the
longitudinal axis of the specimen which is bent so that the weld root surface
becomes the convex surface of the bent specimen.

6.0 CALIBRATION
6.1 Precession and bias statements are not made for this method, because the result is a
non-numerical one. Checks shall be done to ensure steady plunger movement
without any lateral motion.

Title: Guided Bend Test of Steel Specimens.

7.0 METHOD OF TESTING

7.1 The specimen is bent in a U shaped die by means of a centrally applied force to the
weldment in a flat specimen supported at two locations, equidistant from the line of
application of force. The specimen is forced into the die by a plunger having the
shape necessary to produce the desired contour.
7.2 Bending is done by moving the plunger with relation to the die, steadily, without any
lateral motion until the specimen conforms to U shape until a 3.2 mm wire can not
be inserted between the specimen and any point on the curvature of the plunger
member of the jig. The convex surface of the bent specimen shall be examined for
cracks or other open defects. This method is used to evaluate the quality of welds as
a function of ductility (ability to resist cracking during bending).

8.0 SAFETY PRECAUTION

8.1 Precaution shall be taken to protect personnel from flying broken specimen and
hazards associated with specimen slipping and falling.

9.0 DOCUMENTATION
9.1 Convex surface of the bent specimen shall be examined and interpreted as per the
requirements of the relevant standards and documented in the Welding Procedure
